Township hears plans for new five-home proposal Greenbank development pondered by council By Kay Langmuir Port Perry Star Greenbank has enough water to meet current demands even after the drought-like conditions experienced here this past summer, says a spokesperson with the Durham Region Works department. Long-standing con- cerns over water supplies in the hamlet surfaced among residents recently when a developer announced plans for another five residential lots west of Highway 12 where water concerns have traditionally been greatest. "We actually got through the summer with- out any water restrictions required in the area," Ron Motum, technical support supervisor for the region's works program, said last Monday. Larry Dekkema, part- owner of the site just north of Cragg Rd. appeared before council at their Sept. 10 meeting to request a bylaw variance on current lot frontage requirements. He stressed that the You're not a rat. Life's not a race. "We're not asking for smaller lots, we're just asking for a reduction in the lot frontages," he said. Durham Region has also been given a portion of the development site for use as a future well site if needed, Mr. Dekkema said. But residents remained leery. "There have been water problems there from the beginning," Carol Phoenix told council. She said her family originally owned the land in question as part of a large farm in the 1840s. New wells drilled on the property often drained existing wells, she said. The region has not yet drilled a test well on the site. Area residents were also worried that the extent of future growth in Greenbank could damage the quality of life for resi- dents in the small hamlet. "My fear would be that Greenbank would outgrow its current facilities and become a bedroom com- STAR FREE PREVIEW OF ALL 35 NEW CHANNELS until January 1, 2002 (almost 4 months!!) munity," said Cathy Galberg of Cragg Rd. For example, she added, the community hall can only accommo- date the people currently living there. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt assured residents there is no future growth planned for Greenbank "until God knows when as there's no more water and sewage capacity." Beginning September Councillors also sug- gested residents view Scugog Township's Official Plan to further assure themselves that no future growth is planned for Greenbank. Council tabled the bylaw variance request to allow time to sort out con- flicting information on whether or not there was a waterway on the property. | NEW FALL HOURS § FOR AUTOMATIC * Installation Extra Receive $ 5 (0 (You pay $9900 Basic Installation) OFF PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION Family Operated Since 190856 Po 32 (+ (YT -- Satellite & Electronics Inc.
