Organizers were almost giddy at first when reached yesterday morning by reporters, excited to tell of how wonderful of a day it had been on Sunday when 540 crammed into Palmer Park shortly before 9 a.m. to take part in the annual run. In the past, organizers had come to expect about 400 people to show up each year, and they were quite happy with that. Sure, a few more people here and there would be great, but they never imagined the number would reach past the 500 level. In fact, they were so surprised by the number of people who took part that they came up short when it came to handing out participa- tion certificates. I'm sure everyone who missed out on getting a momento understood. So now, Scugog, you have set the bar even higher than before. Fourshundred has been the number organizers have been expecting for a few years, but now, that number has been raised. It is up to you next year, in September 2002, to match and hopefully exceed the fabulous figures that were accomplished this year. At the rate that families are moving into Scugog and the way the township is expanding, that shouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, almost everyone these days has been touched by cancer in one way or another, be it through family or friends. With no cure on the horizon just yet, the battle against cancer will wage on.The effort to find the answer to one of humanity's deadliest diseases will continue, and the people of Port Perry, Scugog and beyond will know that they did their part to help. subsequent issue or the refund of any monies pad Tor the advertisement.
