McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MolJacks are batting .1000 with back-to-back victories to start the new season of Junior C hockey. And they are full marks for their perfect average so far as they thumped the Bobcaygeon Bullets 9-4 last Friday and then clipped the Georgina Ice 6-2 Sunday afternoon in front of an appreciative home-town crowd at the Scugog Arena. Head coach Neil Evans called the two wins a "great way to start" the new season as the MoJacks enter their 30th year in the Central Junior C Hockey League, all of them under the sponsorship of Mother Jacksons (Flamingo Pastries) of Port Perry. Coach Evans told The Port Perry Star after the game Sunday he was especially pleased to see the goals-against-average is just three per game, a stat he wants the club to strive for this year. And two reasons why that stat stands after two outings was the play of netminders Matt Balser, who got the win over Bobcaygeon, and Matt MacKinnon, who was stellar between the irons against the Ice. Evans praised the work of both his rookie stoppers and said he plans to alternate them on a game-by-game basis this year. MacKinnon, a Pickering native who two years ago was a back-up with the Junior A Panthers, was especially sharp in the early going of Sunday's match when the score was close. He made perhaps his best stop of the contest late in the first period when he thwarted a partial breakaway with the MoJacks lead- ing by a count of 1-0. The only pucks that got behind him were near perfect shots along the ice just inside the post off the stick of veteran Georgina sniper Trevor Sedore, and came after MoJacks had romped to a 5-0 lead. MacKinnon brings a reputation as the kind of goalie who gets stronger as a game goes on, and if the opposition can't get to him early, they may not get to him at all. As for their own firepower, the MoJacks showed off plenty so far this young season with Port Perry native Ryan McQuade notching a hat trick against Georgina, and JOHN B. Despite the fact that Brampton represented the East at the Mann Cup, Curtis said that he still felt the Redmen were the best team in Canada. Johnson said that he looks forward to next season as the squad has some unfinished business to deal with The defending Mann Cup Champion Brooklin Redmen finished wins, four losses and one tie good for 31 points and first overall in the OLA Major Series. They had a home record of 8-2-0 and a road record of 7-2-1. The goaltending trio of Rob Blasdell, Gee Nash and Phil Wetherup led the league with a goals against average of 9.3 goals per game. Team captain, Shawn Williams with 57 goals, 36 assists and 93 points tied Brampton's Josh Sanderson for the scoring title. The Redmen met the St Catharines Major Athletics in the first round of the playoffs and beat them by four games to one in a best of seven series. The Brampton Excelsiors knocked off the Peterborough Lakers by the same four games to one, setting up a repeat of the 2000 OLA Finals. However, this year the Excelsiors were the visitors beating the Redmen four games to two and earn- Turn to Page 24 officially wraps up As we approach the end of a fine season of bowling, we can look back on some enjoyable afternoons and evenings at the club. The Monday night ses- sions were very popular and the sponsors of the teams involved in these competitions have our thanks for their financial assistance. The team of Lois Dallas, Willie Stone and Don McMillan were the overall winners of this series. The jitneys on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings were well attend- ed with Mac Allbright, Grace Pargeter and Gladys McMillan taking the hon- ours as winners of that series. Our club is host to a large number of tourna- ments featuring bowlers ' from many of the area clubs. Local business peo- ple with their financial help are sponsors for these com- petitions and all our mem- bers are eligible for these tournaments with the opportunity to compete in games at other clubs. All bowling clubs are non-prof- it organizations and rely on the help of volunteers with- in the club to perform the many chores that arise.
