Emergency crews responded to the airstrip on the north side of Hwy. 7A, just west of the village of Nestleton, around | p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 29) after witnesses on the ground and another in the air reported a plane in trouble. Staff-Sergeant Jim Douglas of North Durham's 26 Division told The Star another pilot fly- ing behind the plane said the engine of the doomed craft was "revving up then down erratically." Rick Pilsen of the Transport Safety Board is investigating the acci- dent. "He was an experi- enced pilot but whether his license was up to date SEIS Mra hot ae we do not know," Mr. Pilsen said. "We do know that he owned the plane and that he was up on his first solo flight in the plane." According to witnesses on the ground the plane nose-dived into a field about 100 metres short of the runway where most of the aerial sequences for the film 'Fly Away Home', about local ultralight pilot and naturalist Bill Lishman, was filmed. The field is a favorite airstrip for ultralight pilots, some in planes that appear like regular aircraft. The pilot, 74-year-old Wilfred Grignon, who Staff-Sgt. Douglas said was an experienced flyer, was killed on impact and had to be cut from the wreckage of his single- engine Buccaneer amphibious aircraft.
