"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - 19 Top students to be honoured by Ontario Port Perry students in the running for provincial scholarships Two hundred and sev- enty six students from 23 secondary schools in the Region of Durham have been awarded the Aiming for the Top Tuition Scholarships, a provincial program designed to recognize high performing students with top marks, local MPPs have announced. Almost 8,000 of Ontario's top scholars will receive the scholar- ships, which consider both academic excel- lence and financial need. Aiming for the Top Tuition Scholarships are awarded to top perform- ing high school graduates who are going to college or university in Ontario. "I am delighted to rec- ognize so many hard working students for their outstanding achievement," said Janet Ecker, MPP for Pickering- Ajax-Uxbridge. "Through Aiming for the Top Scholarships we are rewarding their hard work and dedication as they move on to contin- ued success at a college or university." More than 17,000 students, repre- senting almost 800 schools across the province, applied for the scholarship in its second year of operation. Winners may receive a tuition scholarship worth up to $3,500 per year, depending upon their financial need and the amount of their tuition. Over 2,700 students have received the maximum award this year. Students who maintain an 80 per cent average can contin- ue to receive the award for up to four years of post-secondary educa- tion. The Ontario govern- ment's investment this year will total more than $17 million. When fully implemented in 2003, the annual investment will be $35 million in scholarships for more than 10,000 students each year. Students can earn up to $3,500 in merit-based scholarships before their Ontario Student Assistance program (OSAP) loan is affected, ensuring they receive the full benefit of these scholarships.
