"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Special ceremony held Thursday Ceremony held to mark official opening of Port Perry fire hall By Rik Davie Port Perry Star One month to the day after firefighters suffered their greatest loss in recent history, a new beginning was made when Scugog Fire Hall No. | was opened with congratula- tions and prayers. The $1.36 million hall and the struggles to approve the project were mentioned by Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt in his brief address. In particular, he made mention of the fact that the hall was built much larger than is cur- rently needed. "None of us, as we planned for this new sta- tion, foresaw Sept. 11," Mayor Moffatt said, refer- ring to the terrorist attacks on America. "But, in light of our changing world, this hall gives us the ability to meet those challenges." As part of the ceremony, several local community service groups presented cheques. The Royal Canadian Legion, the Country Jamboree, the Kinsmen Club, both the Port Perry and Blackstock Lions Clubs and the Firefighters Association all presented donations towards new defibrilator units for the Scugog fire service. Chief Richard Miller said afterward that the donations were a great bonus. "These units (kin to heart defibrilators used in hospitals) will give us a huge advantage in ambu- lance calls and we are overwhelmed at the sup- port from these clubs," Chief Miller said. Chief Miller thanked members of Scugog Council, past-and-present, as well as the contractors. "Building a hall on the site of the old one was no easy task," Chief Miller said. "We were never off the air, and maintained an approximate four-minute response time through- out," Chief Miller said. "During construction noth- ing (no buildings) was lost in Scugog Township." As part of the ceremony, a framed copy of the 1960s era Port Perry Star was unveiled in which the con- struction of the old hall was announced. The firefighters lost in the New York City terrorist attacks were remembered in prayer and with a wreath that will hang on the wall of the equipment bay in the new hall.
