Durham Region ant Department will hold its first community clinic as part of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's universal influenza vaccinations available to all residents of Ontario in an effort to decrease the spread of influenza during the peak season. This year, the Health Department will hold 38 community clinics through- out the region with the first clinics scheduled to start on Oct. 16 in Oshawa and Pickering. Clinics will be held across the region, including a clinic at SA. Cawker Public School on Oct. 25 from 3 to 8 p.m. "Last year's launch was very successful. We had no reports of influenza out- breaks in local hospitals or long-term care facilities," says Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham Region Associate Medical Officer of Health. "This is a first in Durham Region." The universal influenza vaccination campaign has two main functions. "Our main goal is to lessen the burden of the flu experi- enced by area residents and families, while provid- ing a means to decrease the high patient volumes Hospital cuts to be felt in Scugog: CEO From Page 1 After reassuring the public that the proposed Cancer Center will go as scheduled, Mr. Lemon agreed that job-cuts may well extend to the Port Perry and Uxbridge sites. Mr. Lemon said that he called the news con- ference to announce the cutbacks to put to rest employee concerns. He told The Star that the recent leaking of internal memos to the press "is a sign of the level of concern our employees have and we want to be sure the cor- rect information is being relayed." Among the programs delayed or cut are the series of womens' health services, the foot clinic and a freeze on the eye and eye glasses clinic at last years levels. In closing, Mr. Lemon warned that if no further funding allowances are forthcoming after the ministerial review "it will be more like 30 jobs that are affected. If we do not receive any funding adjustment next year we will have to review for yet mare cuts." According to statistics from a 2001 Health Department survey, 34 per cent of the general adult population received a flu shot last year compared to 9 per cent in 1999. In addi- tion, 68 per cent of adults 65 years and older also had an influenza vaccina- tion in 2000 up from 57 per cent for 1999, while almost 36 per cent of area resi- dents 18 to 64 years of age with chronic diseases were vaccinated against the flu, representing a 14 per cent increase over 1999. "We're pleased to see that the number of area residents getting their flu vaccination is on the rise," notes Dr. Reynolds. "This kind of participation cer- tainly helps in controlling influenza outbreaks that are typical during flu sea- son, as everyone, espe- cially the elderly and those suffering from chron- ic diseases, can benefit from being immunized with the flu vaccine. "It's very important for people to understand the tremendous burden that influenza can have on the community and that a safe and effective vaccine is available to protect your- self and your family. By getting a flu shot you can avoid getting the flu, reduce the severity and duration of illness and stop the spread to others especially young children, the elderly and individu- als with chronic diseases."
