After spending 32 year< at the head of the classroom teaching Scugog's young- sters, Mrs. Chandler has opted to pursue other inter- ests, particularly her love for storytelling. Her decision was some- what sudden, and before she could change her mind, Mrs. Chandler had faxed her resignation to the Durham District School Board on Aug. 17. Following that, she drove down to the school board where she dropped off a hard copy of her letter. "1 dropped it through a slot and after that | kept thinking about going back and pulling it back out," recalled Mrs. Chandler recently. However, after a some- what emotional farewell, she has come to terms with her decision and is eager to begin her journey down a different path. "l really want to pursue other interests, I'd like to expand on my storytelling. It takes a lot of work, more than you'd think," she explained. "I want to take more time to research and rehearse my stories before | present them to anybody." A member of the Storytellers of Canada and Toronto Storytellers associa- tions, Mrs. Chandler's inter- est in telling tales began 14 _ years ago when she took an oral narrative class at Trent University in Peterborough. "l loved it. The first time | heard a story really told it took me into another world. It was a 25-minute story and | stopped seeing everyone else in the room, | only heard the story," recalled Mrs. Chandler. "I held my breath and stayed still for the entire story. It was a wonderful experience and | felt so good after. | decided then I "wanted to do the same thing for others." Since her introduction to storytelling, Mrs. Chandler incorporated her penchant for telling tales into her work at Port Perry's S.A. Cawke: Public School, where she taught Grade | students for the past 12 years. Prior to S.A. Cawker, Mrs. Chandler taught primary students at R.H. Cornish Public School for a total of 20 years. As for her old career, Mrs. Chandler takes a few moments for herself to remember her years in the classroom, and then beams her familiar smile. "There's nothing else | would have rather done with my life" she said. "Every day was an adventure. With kids, you never know what's going to happen no matter how well you plan." While she grew up in the Niagara area, Mrs. Chandler landed in Scugog years later after her father, also a teacher, moved to Port Perry High School to head up the science department. After completing her schooling to become a teacher, Mrs. Chandler was set to begin her career in Toronto. She decided against moving to the city, opting instead to stay in the area to be with her boyfriend at the time -- Bemie Chandler. She made the switch to the Ontario County Board of Education, and was assigned to teach primary students at R.H. Cornish. Now, years later, Mrs. Chandler is eager to see some of her former students this week when a special retirement tea is held in her honour at S.A. Cawker from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. After 32 years as a teacher .
