Ee Se 20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 16, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Rowing club welcom es five new boats The Durham Rowing Club held a special ceremo- ny last Saturday (Oct. 13) where they christened five new boats. They welcomed a doubles boat, which was presented to them by the Whitby Knights of Columbus group; a eight-man and two doubles, which were purchased courtesy of a provincial Trillium grant, which will see the club receive $100,000 over three years; and they took tened at noon. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry Mojacks continue to put points up in this Junior C Hockey season -- adding three in a pair of games over the weekend. And though it is still just mid- October, those points could prove very valuable when the final League standings are sorted out in about four months time. The Mojacks collected their three weekend points by virtue of a 3-2 overtime loss Friday in Georgina, and then by beating up on the Bobcaygeon Bullets 10-2 Sunday at the Scugog Arena. So far, the MoJacks have nine points (out of a possible 14) and are . keeping pace with the Bruins and Chiefs, who have 12 and 11 respec- tively. Perhaps more importantly, the team is starting to put distance between itself, Georgina, Bobcaygeon and Little Britain. As of Sunday night, the Ice had three points, the Bullets two and the Merchants have yet to register any- thing. Head coach Neil Evans has got this young, exciting team off to the best start in several seasons and he's very encouraged by the way the players are performing so far. Commenting after Sunday's win, he praised the team's work ethic, stat- ing that when the players come to the arena ready to work as hard as possi- ble, the MoJacks "will be tough to beat." That work ethic was very much in evidence against the Bobcaygeon team, which has failed to make the playoffs since its entry into the Central League. But it's a different Bullet squad this season -- big, aggressive and strong in the trenches, and they were coming off their first victory of this season, a 7-4 win over Georgina the previous evening. For the first period the 'Cage looked like they might just make it two in a row as they stormed around in the MoJack end of the rink and were rewarded with a 1-0 lead at the 10:57 mark when Josh Shaw finished off a two-on-one break with a shot over the blocker of MoJack netminder Matt Balser. Shaw got the second Bullet goal in the final frame, too little too late. The MoJacks were fortunate the score was not higher as Balser had to come up with several key stops in the early going to let his team weather the storm and get back in the game. Matt Harris tied it at 13:50 on a short-handed effort as he took full advantage of a breakaway to beat Paul Sandre with a shot along the ice.
