"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 21 Energetic, enthusiastic group of girls Peewee Girls impressive in first game against Uxbridge Port Perry's Peewee Girls Select team played an impressive first game on Oct. 6 against Uxbridge. Allyson Pehlemann popped the one and only goal early in the first period. All the girls worked very hard defen- sively and offensively to maintain their win. Oct. 13 brought a 1-1 tie to the team playing in Brighton against a Cold Creek team. The girls fought a hard battle through- out with Leah Franssen scoring in the sec- ond period assisted by Jamie Steranka We have a great bunch of girls again this year starting with our goalie Jennifer Joncas who plays a superb net. Next we have our tireless offense, Lesley Donovan, Janet Griffen, Lauren Guthrie, Leah Franssen, Courtney Ristow, Britney Williamson, Michelle Love, Ashley Morton and Allyson Pehlemann. Our defense, Lynsey Cosburn, Carley Churchill, Jamie Steranka, Liz Reinhardt, Lisa Duruwala and Caitlyn Dunn are a very energetic group who give their all out on the ice. Best of luck girls in all of your future and Michelle Love. games. From Page 20 It was the first of three for Harris who collected a couple of assists as well. Captain Adam Jones gave the MoJacks a 2-1 lead late in the first with a power-play marker set up by linemates Harris and Darryl Steele. This newly formed line had a real field day on the scoresheet, collecting 14 points. Harris had five, as did Steele with three goals and two helpers, while Jones had three assists to go with his goal. The Mojacks began to wrestle control of the game from the Bullets late in the first period, and got a big boost early in the second with a successful kill of a long two-man disadvan- tage. At the end of 40 min- utes, the green and white had built a well-earned 5-1 lead and put the game pretty much out of reach. Other marksmen were Jason Whitworth with a pair and singles by Dane Grey and Adam Mercer. Coach Evans said he was pleased to see Whitworth net two goals (his first of the season) and he looked very comfortable on a new line with Ryan McQuade MoJacks host Lakefield Sunday night and Mercer. Against the Ice on Friday night, the MoJacks stum- bled through the first 40 minutes before taking a 2-1 lead in the third on goals by Brent Stokes and Steele, with jones getting an assist on each. But the Ice were able to tie things up before regula- tion. ran out, and then Trevor Sedore went to work early in the five-minute OT. The veteran Sedore, with his deft scoring touch, beat Garett MacKinnon with a shot along the ice just inside the post. SLAPSHOTS: This MoJack team is an exciting one to watch and should only get better as the sea- son progresses. There is plenty of speed and scor- ing talent on all the forward units, and most of the time no shortage of hustle and drive. That "work ethic" referred to by coach Evans was present late in Sunday's game against the Bullets. Even with a com- manding lead, the players never stopped hustling and working hard, when they might have just "coasted" through to the final buzzer. And in MacKinnon and Balser, the MoJacks have Goreski 4, From Page 20 and Paul Roberts with one each. Goalscorers for the Scugog Movers were Ken Davison with two and Jay Adams and Keijo Kinnunen with one each. Compton 2 Assisting on the goals were Chris Brain with two, Ken Davison, Mike Adam, Jay Adam, and Mervin Stevenson with one each. Bill Van Camp had two assists in the losing cause. two of the best Junior C net- minders in a long time, based on their play so far this season. In seven games they have surren- dered just 18 goals, well ahead of the coach's wish to keep the goals against down to three per game. A record of three goals- against or better is consid- ered outstanding at any level of Junior hockey. Upcoming action will have the Mojacks in Little Britain on Saturday night, and the Merchants should be more than hungry. They have yet to win this season and were blanked 5-0 by the Mojacks in their only meeting so far. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the green and white face a stern test with the Lakefield Chiefs, who pinned a solid defeat on them Oct. 2 in Lakefield. The MoJacks speed and quickness should be a big factor on the roomier ice surface at the Scugog Arena. A win over the Chiefs would go a long way to boosting the confidence of this young, talented MoJack squad.
