Beginning on Oct. 27, Branch 419 members are hoping once again that Scugog residents will support their efforts to raise funds during their 15-day campaign, which will see volunteers set up across the town of Port Perry at vari- ous high-traffic locations. "Canvassers will be out and around town and we hope people will support us again this year," said Barb Doupe, chair of the poppy campaign. All donations collected by local legion members, cadets, volunteers and at local businesses through collection boxes will be used in a number of ways, but, most importantly, will be kept in Scugog. "We'll keep all the donations here, in the community," said Mrs. Doupe. "The funds will help our veterans (of which there are about 100 in Scugog) in various ways, including helping with their med- ical supplies, and we're going to use some of the money to help buy defibril- lator units for the (Scugog) Fire Department." "All of the funds will stay in the Township of Scugog; they're not just going to Port Perry, but the entire town- ship," Mrs. Doupe stressed. On average, the legion's annual poppy campaign raises about $14,000. "We have really strong support from the community. They realize that this money is going back into their communi- ty to help them," added Mrs. Doupe. "But we have to let (veterans) know what there is for them. We have lots of services and ways to help veterans, all they have to do is come forward, but, some of them are too proud to ask for help." This year, the Port Perry Legion will hold its Remembrance Supper on Saturday, Nov. 10. Veterans and other Legion members are invited, and, in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America, admission to the dinner is free. "Remembrance Day is exactly 60 days after the attacks on the U.S.," said Legion president Rory Thompson. "It's probably going to be a long war. We want people to know that we do remember." On Nov. ||, a Remembrance Day cere- mony will be held at the Port Perry Legion beginning at 10:30 a.m. A parade will wind its way around the block -- beginning at the legion, located at 484 Bay St., south on Old Simcoe Rd., east on Q rtf CALI Ron Hartrick and Barb Doupe, co-chairs of the 2001 poppy campaign, are preparing for this weekend's kickoff.
