12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 23, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Durham Region could face a labour crunch in the near future From Page 1 He also noted that Port Perry is not located on a major transportation route, therefore reducing its attraction. "If you look at Uxbridge and its proximity to (Hwy.) 404, that has allowed them to create an industrial park," he said. Councillor Pearce also questioned whether the success of the Great Blue Heron Casino on Scugog Island was making it hard- er for smaller businesses to attract employees. "Is the casino taking all the employees from the smaller businesses? The casino is a major employer in Durham Region -- it employs more than 800 people -- but is it tapping into the market too heavi- ly?" asked the Ward 2 rep. "There could be reper- cussions because of this." Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt agreed that ulti- mately the success of the local gaming house could cause potential problems for smaller merchants. "It's a fact; the casino is competing for employees, but it draws from all over. However, any companies who look at moving into Scugog know that they have to compete with the casino for employees," he said. "But, the casino is a Po oH : good source of employ- ment for people here. There are signs up all over town, businesses looking to hire and that's good and bad news." As well, Mr. Olive noted that some students coming out of Durham high schools are not meeting employers' standards. "The education of young people coming out of high schools is a prob- lem. Several times it's been mentioned that the abilities of people coming out of high school are truly low," he said. Mr. Olive stressed that none of the complaints were made by Scugog business owners, nor were they in regards to local stu- dents. "I've been told that out of 30 or 40 people inter- viewed, these employers may consider one or two students," said Mr. Olive. He also noted that the problem is compounded by the number of people retiring. "The biggest problem we face is labour. I don't know where we're going to get the people, and that could be a serious prob- lem in the future," said Mr. Olive. "We do, however, have a lot of good things going for us in Durham Region. It's an attractive place to live and work and the quality of life is unparalleled." 2a Protec yourself and the ones you lve - te chidren, dey parents - rom the flu Th Region of Dut Heath Dement vil bs fering FREE infencavacinaon cic ! throughout Durham Region for all residents over the age of 6 months. Increased security could impact 2002 budgets From Page 1 of Health, and Durham Emergency Director Ivan Ciuciura told media gath- ered in the Durham Region council chambers there had been no known Anthrax incidents in Durham or in Ontario. Mr. Anderson said that all Durham emergency services were poised, ready and equipped to deal with any Anthrax outbreak, but he quickly added that it's quite unlikely an attack will take place here. "To say there have been no terrorist attacks in Durham is not entirely true," Mr. Anderson said. "Terrorism comes in many forms and the very fact that people are can- celling trips and being suspicious of packages and mail is a form of emo- tional terrorism being inflicted upon us." At this point, extra measures, which include stepped up security at all Durham Region water treatment plants and a Durham Regional Police presence at both the Pickering and Darlington nuclear plants, have not impacted on budgeting, but improved security may play a part in police budget requests next year. Chief McAlpine warned pranksters that his men will take bomb scares and Anthrax hoax letters very seriously in the wake of public con- cern. "We will take a very dim view of anything that causes an adverse public reaction," Chief McAlpine said. "Anyone we appre- hend, well they will have the opportunity of saying 'Good morning your hon- our', | promise them that." Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Members of Scugog Council were upset to learn this week that funds which had been earmarked to purchase software for the works department was transferred to the clerk's department without proper authorization. Councillors questioned an item in the capital works project status report from Public Works Director Larry Postill which suggested that $8,000 budgeted to purchase application soft- ware had been diverted to purchase document scan- ning software for a pilot project in the clerk's department. Ward | Councillor Larry Corrigan objected to the transfer, saying he didn't like to see money moved from one department to another. Councillor Marilyn Pearce, who also sits as the township's financial chief, asked Scugog's Chief Administrative Officer, Yvonne de Wit, if the money had already been spent. "Yes it has Councillor", the CAO replied. To that, the Ward 2 rep stressed that "money can not be moved from one department to another for a project that was not approved." ne eases a:omarn wn PINAL LAN LLNS 2S Sis LENA Lalu 0® Qi ENP STIG SR SSSR SY SSRI RT SC SI J rns Ress somone pions seins FRC IROL) N in ¥
