2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 30, 2001 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Port Perry service organization holds annual awards night Rotary Club honours its best By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star If anyone has ever doubted the Port Perry Rotary Club's involvement in community events they should have been at the 20th annual Past President's Dinner and Awards Night last Friday evening. The club received several awards for its fine efforts. Assistant District Governor Lynn Bird, who was accompa- nied by her Rotarian husband Ted, presented three distin- guished awards to President Jim Lawrence. The awards were for Best External Public Relations Club for 2001; District Award for Greatest Increase in Membership Growth, and the Rotary International Award pertaining to growth. "These honours are signifi- cant of the success of your Rotary Club," Mrs. Bird said. "You have also made my hus- band and I so welcome here tonight." The evening was also a big thank you to Past President ~ Dennis Bayley for all his efforts during his reigning year (July 2000 to June 2001). Of course, behind every great man, there is an even greater lady. On behalf of the Port Perry Rotary, Mr. Lawrence's wife, Margaret, presented a beautiful bou- quet to Mr. Bayley's wife, Patricia. Among the many contribu- tions to the community during Mr. Bayley's term as president were another prosperous Snowarama, feeding a Christmas dinner to 250 seniors, improvements made to Rotary Park, and donations were made to Operation Scugog, Community Care, as well as the First Boy Scouts. During that term the Rotary Club also provided bursaries to the local high schools and Durham College, as well as to Lakeridge Health Port Perry. An award was given to another member, too. Thé Rotarian of the Year award was given to Jim Jenkins, a first- year member who worked very hard as chair for Snowarama and the Dinner Auction. A further highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Paul Harris Award. Named after the founder of Rotary, it's the most presti- gious award given out in Rotary today. Rr a ---- 2] Ronde LT al The Paul Harris Award was given to two dedicated people within Rotary. Rotarian Heather Haliburton-Smith, who was the first woman to join the Port Perry Rotary Club, and non- member Karen Richardson, wife of Rotarian John Richardson, were the recipi- ents of this fine award. It's now a citation the couple can share as Mr. Richardson had received the distinguished Award the year before. "Heather has been very active in every aspect of Rotary, in particular, with Aquarama," Mr. Bayley said. On receiving the award, Mrs. Haliburton-Smith said she was "totally shocked and humbled. "And Karen was on the planning committee for the Secret Garden Dinner Auction, and helped out with all other events," Mr. Bayley said. "As an artist her talents come through with the dinner auc- tion." Speaking to Mrs. Richardson afterwards, she said, "it's working with the Rotary Club of Port Perry that brings out the best in people."
