McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry Mojacks climbed into second place in the Central Ontario Jr. C League standings after nipping the Georgina Ice 4-3 Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The win gives the MoJacks 15 points, one ahead of Lakefield, and six back of the league-leading Uxbridge Bruins. And by winning, the MoJacks leaped four points ahead of the Ice. Had the tables been reversed and the Ice taken the win, the two teams would have been tied for third with 13 points each. Assistant coach Shane Norton noted the importance of Sunday's win over the Ice. "It means the difference between being alone in sec- ond, or tied for third," he said after the game. In fact, he went on to say that two points on any night are getting more and more important for all teams in the loop, in light of the way the point totals are starting to bunch up at this early stage of the 42-game cam- paign. Norton, who captained the Mojacks last season and was League MVP, said he was generally pleased with the way the team performed against the Ice. "We seemed to be able to control (the game) most of the time, except for a couple of five-minute spurts," he said. The teams traded goals in the first period with Adam Mercer netting his sixth and Andrew Steele his ninth. Matt Harris collected helpers on both goals. Steele's goal came late in the period and pulled the MoJacks into a 2-2 deadlock after the Ice had gone The teams of the mens' league plan on playing an important part in rasing funds for the new ice pad. The offensive potential of the team l'ecame apparent as the Predators ju nped into a 4-0 lead. Port Hope came back with two goals to close the gap before the Port Perry offense shifted into high gear and scored five more goals late in the game. The final score settled out at 9-3 for Port Perry. Brent Kirk, playing centre for a change, was shooting bullets and scored a hat trick. A pair each went to Josh (Soft Hands) Malyon and Zack (Attack) Dickson, with singles going to Brody (Taz) Anderson and his non-relative, Kyle Anderson. Adding assists were Zack Dickson (2), Travis Johnstone (2), Jonathan Port Perry humbles Port Hope Brouse, Dakota Watson, Tyler Postill, Justin Hickey, Dalton Smith, Nick Loyst, and Kyle Anderson. Brent Stokes wrapped one past Lance King in the Ice net to give the Mojacks a lead which they held for the remainder of the match. The MoJacks took a two-goal cushion midway through the period on some pretty passing by the trio of Dane Grey, Callum Marshall and Stokes. Playing with a two- man advantage, Stokes carried the puck along the boards in the Ice zone, passed to Marshall who in turn fed the puck to Grey speeding to the goal crease. He was looking at a nearly wide open net and made sure with a rising shot under the cross bar. The Ice made a game of it early in the third with Ted Murrell beating Garett MacKinnon on an unassisted effort. But the Port Perry keeper shut the door the rest of the way and was full marks for the victory. In fact, MacKinnon had to work hard for the win, com- ing up with several superb stops, including two in the dying seconds of the game With just 4.7 ticks left on the clock and a faceoff deep in the MoJack zone, the Ice managed two quick shots, the second one stopped by MacKinnon's glove as he sprawled across the goal line. This was a quick-tempo, entertaining hockey game with the teams taking only a handful of penalties And there was a decent-sized crowd on hand, despite the competition from some baseball game down in Arizona The MoJacks were without captain Adam Jones (sit- ting out a one-game suspension for an instigator call in a game last Sunday) and veteran Jeff Ashton, out for the same reason.
