"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 9 LAP + » Somer So------ Council agrees on funding for Town Hall 1873 From Page 1 Parks and Recreation will require $3,597,000 to com- plete all its projects, but it was quickly pointed out that of this, $3 million is designated for the second ice pad at the Scugog Arena. Other items included in the preliminary budget include the purchase of a piece of Water St. land for $175,000 and lighting at the Carolyn Best Ball Diamonds for $150,000. The smallest of the proposed budgets was the Fire Department's, which is only asking for $74,500 in 2002. These funds will go towards purchasing new bunker gear, self-contained breathing apparatuses, bottles and a back-up power generator. But Councillor Pearce pointed out that the fire department had just moved into their brand new building and in the next year or two council should expect some substantial expenses for new fire trucks. Mayor Doug Moffatt commented that it appeared that the township was finally getting things done that have been requested by residents for the past few years. "I think we're in good shape," he said, suggesting that over the next three to five years the township would be able to start work on an indoor pool and help refurbish the aging Town Hall. The mayor suggested that when the township gets to the point when most of its recreation list has been checking off they should look at putting more money into work on Scugog"s roads. But Councillor Pearce said they can't just transfer money from one department to another because they are not allowed to by law. She said they need the other two levels of govern- ment (provincial and federal) to identify the problems with infrastructure. "We have to lobby for infrastructure funding. We are never going to get roads done unless they get involved," she said. Regional Councillor Ken Carruthers said council has to put a plan in place for the township's roads. "If we don't they will continue to deteriorate. We have a problem and have to address it. We can't just sit back," he said. Durham MPP John O'Toole and Durham MP Alex Shepherd to a meeting to show them that the town- ship is doing a good job on their end, but need further help with infrastructure. Also coming under discussion was the Town Hall 1873 project and Councillor Pearce suggested that it reflected sm~rt growth. "Traditionally we have not funded the arts commu- nity, funding primarily recreational needs," she said. But most members of council agreed that helping to further the cause of the Town Hall was worthwhile and they were willing to enter into the project as a partner. Councillor Pearce said that it was important "the community know we are partners here" and felt that the township should participate. "We could help fund the Town Hall project and still have the money we need for the second ice pad and swimming pool," she said. www.portperrystar.com 4 tl 43g (Y 2 * YATE At A 8 piece pizza with 1 item /2 Ib. wings and garlic bread $1399 DIG rE TIOR BLIGHT 11h. wings & garlic bread $1999 21g [os [ [I Mixture ¥ Sweet Snacks Public board test results to From Page 1 than a poor. score on the part of a good student 'would be taken as any more than a blip in the over- all student achievement record."
