Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Council will take another look at hav- ing some kind of opening exercise or prayer before council meetings. After turning down the idea a couple of weeks ago, at least one Scugog resi- dent has indicated his disappointment and Mayor Doug Moffatt suggested last Monday that the issue be revisited. Prince Albert's John Walhout wrote to council saying he was disappointed with the township's recent decision and included in his letter a copy of the prayer used in the House of Commons as a suggestion of the type which could | be used. Council has asked staff to investigate the matter further and report back in the near future. Got a letter for the editor? Email us: editorial@portperrystar.com Township to look into deductions for United Way By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Colin Bolton, a representative of the United Way, made a presentation to Scugog Township council last Monday regarding the organization's plans for its 2001-2002 campaign' Mr. Bolton urged council to get involved with the United Way fundrais- ing and suggested council set up a auto- matic deduction system for their staff. "We spend all our money locally and fund agencies which the government does not fund," he said. Mr. Bolton said that the United Way receives a lot of its funds through payroll deduction from everyday people who give about $2 per week. "Most of our money comes from those with the least," he said. Mayor Moffatt was quick to jump on the bandwagon, suggesting that the township should look into payroll deduction if it isn't already being done. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce echoed the mayor's thoughts and asked that staff investigate setting up a deduc- tion for municipal staff. The township would be allowed to earmark which agencies or areas would receive their donations, said Mr. Bolton. There are 38 full-time township employees.
