Durham Regional Police say that officers were called to the scene at 1:39 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 17) after two bikes heading in opposite directions on the Boundary Road between Scugog Township and Oshawa collided about 63 metres west of Cochrane Rd. The 36-year-old victim, who was riding his bike eastbound, was rushed to Lakeridge Health Oshawa where he was pro- nounced dead. The other rider involved in the accident - - a 33-year-old Ajax man - - was unhurt in the crash. The roadway was closed from | p.m. until 6 p.m. while the investigat- ing team gathered evi- dence. The name of the deceased has been with- held pending notification of next-of-kin. Last weekend's colli- sion was the second fatal accident in the region involving off-road type vehicles this year. "This should be a reminder to people using recreational vehicles that they are not alone on the trails and that caution must be used in these areas," said Durham Police Staff-Sergeant Jim Douglass said. The accident is under investigation by Const. Kennaly of the Traffic management Unit and police are asking anyone who was in the area of the Raglan Pits at the time of the crash to contact them at 905-579-1520, ext. 5256. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Construction is slated to begin in Blackstock next year on watermains in the village. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt pro- duced a map at the regular meeting of council last Monday showing the two proposed areas along Old Scugog Rd. from Meadow Crest Drive to Alexander St. and from the new water pumps into the present system along Old Simcoe Rd. While these are the only areas scheduled next year, Mayor Moffatt suggested that sections of Greensboro Dr, Mason St., Church St. and a portion of Old Simcoe Rd. in the centre of the village were designated as areas for watermains in the "future". And, if residents were really enthusiastic about hav- ing them done the work could probably be expedited, he added. The mayor made it clear the only way this could happen was if more than 51 per cent of the residents living along those stretches of road were in agreement with construc- tion and would hook into the sys- tem when it was completed. Costs for the "future watermain" projects are as follows: Greensboro Dr, $242,000; Old Scugog Rd. $423,000; Church St., $410,000; and Mason St, $83,000, for a total of $1,158,000. Anyone petitioning for this work would be required to hook up to the new system when the water- mains were completed, said the mayor. By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star A letter from Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman ask- -ing for Scugog's assis- tance in establishing a tax holiday in Ontario fell on deaf ears last week. The Toronto mayor was seeking the support of a resolution to peti- tion the federal and provincial governments to suspend collecting the Goods and Services Tax as well as the Provincial Sales Tax dur- ing the months of August and November to stimu- late the economy and Scugog nixes tax plan assist low income fami- lies. But there was no sup- port for Mr. Lastma..'s resolution around the Scugog Council table. Mayor Doug Moffatt suggested that stores may just as well close up during the summer month if people knew they could by items tax- free during August and November. He said he could sup- port the lowering of the tax rates by | or 2 per |. cent over a longer peri- od of time, but not the suggestion of his Toronto counterpart.
