Santa Claus is coming to town and bringing with him all the spirit and joy that comes with the holiday season. There has been some controversy recently over whether the Port Perry Santa Claus Parade has become too commercial and it's time to put that to rest before Old St. Nick arrives. Facts state that the oldest parades in North America -- the Toronto Santa Claus Parade and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade that introduces St. Nick to our American neighbours this very weekend -- were the work of debariment stores bent on luring trade. So what! Along with a good marketing scheme was born not only a tradition of sitting on the sidewalk with your little ones and being a kid again for a few brief moments, but a coming together of communities to watch the spectacle that is made possible not only by community groups but local business owners who put the time, effort and dollars forward to make the whole thing happen every year. What we need to do to thank our local business owners is make the dollars stay in town whenever pos- sible and remember the real spirit of the holidays that the parades reflect. Remember those in our community, in our country and in the world who are in need of our help in the form of food, clothes or a couple of bucks. Remember also, that the business owners and com- panies around town are members of the community too and that it is the employees of those businesses who many times give of their free time to build the floats and sit on them waving merrily at us no matter the weather. A thing only becomes commercial when we forget what the true spirit of it is. Welcome Santa ! Peter Hvidsten This picture shows the Grand Trunk Railway station near Manchester in the late 1800s. The station was located about one mile south of the village of Manchester, and when this photo was taken, the 'platform in front of the station was still not built and the roof had not been extended to give passengers protection while waiting for the train. LETTERS We should all do our part to help those in need To the Editor: "Helping others" to me is help- ing the world be a perfect place to live in. If you help one person it is like you are helping the whole world. I think the tragedy that hap- pened on Sept. 11 brought the world closer together. I am not saying it was right, | am saying that it made us realize that we are so lucky for what we have. Well I know it has to me, | don't know about anyone else. After what happened that day we have started working together. | know that's what I think is helping. We are helping people recover from losing loved ones, over what started to be a bright sunny day all over the States, to a day hard to understand. The month is now November and they still have not finished cleaning up all the debris of what was destroyed that day. I think that the police, the firefighters, and volunteers have been working very hard from that day to find all the bodies that are still missing from that tragic day. This is what | mean by helping others in good and bad times. The president and the prime minister have also been doing an awesome job of trying to keep everyone aware of what is going on in America, Canada and the world in case there is going to be another terrorist attack. I think that young kids that don't know what is going on are okay The older kids, on the other hand, know what is going on, and are a little worried about what is going to happen. | know | am a little scared. | have two younger siblings and | do not think they actually know what is really going on. | do a lot in my local town of Port Perry. | work at the nursing home and | help out all the time in my school Helping others helps me feel good that I live in a world Turn to Page 7
