"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 13 Aquatic centre is nearing completion, on budget New pool moving right along on schedule, council told By J. Peter Hvidsten Port Perry Star Scugog's new outdoor pool, located on the site of the former Birdseye Centre Pool beside the local library, is nearing completion and appears to be on budget. Jay Todd, Scugog's Director of Parks and Recreation, presented a slide show to council last week showing how the pool has developed from informed councillors that the project should end up very close to its $361,000 budget. The beautiful facility, complete with a childrens' wading pool and a larger pool, will be ready for use next summer. When questioned about the final cleanup around the pool, Mr. Todd said his budget was very tight but added he could have the excess fill removed, land graded and sod planted along the pool fence for about $1,000. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce suggested the money be made avail- able and urged the Mr. Todd to get the job fin- ished this fall and to not wait until spring. "Get it out of the way immediately, the weather will change very soon," responded Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt. Police looking for answers in car theft case Durham Regional Police officers are looking for answers after they found a newer-model black Hyundai on Scugog Line 12 on Nov. 23. The license plates on the vehicle did not match the vehicle and a further investigation revealed them to be stolen from the Hamilton area, say police. The vehicle was so new that the VIN registration number had not yet been assigned to an ownership. Police have suspects in the case and are continuing to investigate Anyone who may have seen persons in the area of Scugog Line 12 during the evening hours of Nov. 23 is asked to call Durham Regional Police officers at 905- 579-1520. MARK PUCKRIN 905-985-4300 start to finish. He also Scugog Township will initiate a Driver/Operator Awards Program for its staff beginning next year. A recommendation made to council last Monday by Director of Public Works Larry Postill noted that the program has enjoyed tremendous success in other municipalities and promotes improved driver awareness; improved employee morale; recognition of good performance and reduced accidents. Mr. Postill submitted the request to council saying that the health and safety of township employees is a fundamental concern to municipalities today and the Scugog to introduce safe driving program program is organized to encourage safe driving habits. He said one of the main objectives of the program is to reduce the number of vehicle collisions through practice of the principles of safe, courteous and defen- sive driving techniques. The award program will be applicable to all employees of Scugog Township who operate a vehicle or piece of equip- ment owned by the municipality. Safe Driver Awards can be earned by opera- tors for operating a vehicle for the dura- tion of a calendar year without a pre- ventable accident. PORT PERRY STAR i Tor.
