Fletcher Funeral Director Township of Scugog COUNCII BRIEFS FIRST TAKE Dan Carter, host of CHEX TV's program "First Take", was to address council Monday with regards to the station's program which features people and fam- ilies from throughout Durham Region. The "Royal Bank Salutes Local Hero's" program has been running for the past two months and during that time has featured a number of residents, includ- ing George Cope, CEO of Telus Communications, who attended school in Port Perry. Mr. Carter hopes to address a number of regional and local councils to make them aware of the pro- gram with the hopes of showcasing more people who live within the community. "It is very important that we take the time to salute people who are making a difference in our communities," he said. NO RAISE FOR OFFICERS Officers of the Scugog Fire Department will not receive an increase in their wages this year, but the hourly rate for training and incidents will be raised by 5.6 per cent, effective January 2002. Council made the decisions during an in-camera session on Nov. 19 and adépted a recommendation that in future years firefighters' hourly rates be included in the increases applied to non-union employees. Council also recommended no change in the remuneration of the Committee of Adjustment, Fence Viewer or Livestock Evaluators at this time. SCUGOG SECOND PAD Ward 4 Councillor Paul Michel, the interim chair- man for the construction of Scugog Arena's second ice pad, informed council that the fundraising com- mittee has been meeting weekly. He said a variety of fundraising events have been discussed and plans are beginning to take shape. Councillor Michel asked for direction with respect to 'corporate sponsorships' by way of renaming the facility or areas within the new arena. He said they have been approached by one donor interested in buying the name of the second pad. "The numbers are extremely substantial," Councillor Michel said. While council endorsed the idea of corporate sponsorship of rooms, ice pads and areas within the complex, councillors felt "Scugog Centre" should be retained on the outside. IGLOOS TO BE MOVED The recycling igloos, located beside the municipal office for many years, will be moved in the near future. Council adopted a recommendation from the Scugog Works Committee to relocate the large blue containers to an area adjacent to the Parks and Recreation Depot. The area is located near the boat launch and the units will be placed in the boulevard area along the west side of the parking lot adjacent to the Parks Depot. Council recommended the move after receiving complaints about the unsightly mess around the igloos from local merchants. WATER WELL TROUBLE Contaminated water at the Port Perry Works Depot, located at 1350 Reach St, has prompted council to recommend staff to comply with a Health Department instruction to install a chlorinator. During routine water tests last summer, the well which provides water for both the works depot and the animal control centre was found to be contami- nated. The well has only been used for washing vehicles and floors at both facilities since that time The Health Department has instructed the Scugog Works Department to install a chlorinator to ensure drinking water quality and an iron filter at an esti- mated cost of $5,700. Council opted to have a chlori- nator installed at this time, and asked staff to pro- vide a report as to alternative, and less expensive methods, to accomplish the other task pe
