Novice boys defeat Pickering, Ajax Predators put up a pair of wins The Port Perry Novice Predators recently played a couple of games against rival Durham area teams. In the first game against the Pickering Panthers, a few line up changes made by coach Brad Brouse seemed to spark the team. Dalton Smith, playing cen- tre for the game, was relentless in his forecheck- ing prompting Pickering to cough up the puck on numerous occasions. It paid off in the form of a goal and two assists for Dalton. Travis Johnstone also had a strong game with two goals and one assist. The game ended 5-2 for Port Perry in a balanced attack with all three lines. scoring. Josh Malyon and Justin Hickey picked up singles. Other assists went to Jonathon Brouse, Tyler Postil and Dakota Doyle. The defensive crew of Mark Boldyke, Dakota Doyle, Brent Kirk, Tyler Postil and Nick Loyst did a great job of shutting down the Pickering offense. In their next game, Port Perry visited the Ajax Knights. The Predators were out for retribution from an earlier season 2-1 loss to the Knights. The ooys were wired for this one and came out flying. Ajax had difficulty responding to the excel- lent forechecking and skat- ing of the Port Perry squad. The Predators won the game 6-1. Zack Dickson notched a hat trick with singles going to Travis Johnstone, Dalton Smith and Connor Ristow. Assisting on the goals were Brody Anderson, Josh Malyon, Connor Ristow, Zack Dickson and Brent Kirk (2). Once again, the Port Perry defense was tough, providing good pro- tection for Derek Curran in net. Derek was solid in goal when called upon. Little Britain will make the From Page 21 Missing from the MoJack's line-up were Jeff Ashton and captain Adam Jones (two game suspensions), Callum Marshall (ill- ness) and Nathan Cotter who suffered what could be a serious eye injury during a ball hockey game at school earlier in the week. With these key players out of the line- up, some teams might have decided to just "to take a weekend off." But this edition of the Mojacks has been playing fine hockey from the sea- son's outset and as much as anything the two wins show there is a lot of character and depth on the squad coached by Neil Evans. In the Little Britain match, the Merchants were coming off two losses the previous weekend and they led the MoJacks until the third period when Darryl Steele knotted the game 4-4 with help from linemate Andrew Mercer. A couple of minutes into the OT, veter- an McQuade, a pure goal scorer, did what he does best. He snared a puck from a Merchant defender, went in alone and deked netminder Ruston for the winner. McQuade was in on the first MoJack marker in the opening frame when he set up Justin Bennett. Steele also had a huge night for the MoJacks as he netted an unassisted goal in the second to cut the Merchants' lead to 4-3. And he assisted on an earlier goal by Mercer for a tidy three-point night. For the Merchants, Steve Gourlie had a hat trick with Dan Turcotte netting a sin- gle. Jon Perrin collected three assists for his team which will earn a single point for the tie in regulation. With the Chiefs coming off an impres- sive 7-3 win over Georgina Saturday night and with three former Jr. A Petes in the line-up, the team was looking to grab a couple of points from the Moacks Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena. But Matt Balser had other ideas as he turned in yet another fine netminding performance to give his team the 3-2 vic- tory. Neil Sluman got what proved to be the game winner early in the final period -- breaking a 2-2 deadlock on the power play with a wrist shot through traffic in front of the Chiefs' cage. trek to Port Perry Sunday Prior to that, the trio of Steele, Andrew Mercer and Matt Harris continued to show superb point-getting talents. Mercer netted both Port Perry goals on set-ups by Steele and Harris. This was an exciting game from start to finish between teams battling in the standings for second spot. And the large crowd at the Scugog Arena noted that they stuck to hockey with just 24 minutes (all minors) in penalties. SLAPSHOTS: One of the players the Chiefs added to their line-up recently has a Port Perry connection. Netminder Mike Laird, who turned in a great game Sunday night in the 3-2 loss, is the nephew of Grant Laird, former president of Port Perry Minor Hockey and cousin of Steve who played several feisty seasons for the MoJacks. MoJack's General Manager Murray Parliament told The Port Perry Star it will be several days before doctors are able to determine the extent of the injury to the eye of Nathan Cotter "They (doctors) are waiting for the swelling to go down before they can assess the injury," he said. "We are hope- ful that Nathan can retumn to the line-up." Initial reports indicate the injury may be serious. "We are concerned for him," said the general manager. The four weekend points give the MoJacks 29 so far this season, three up on Lakefield for second spot in the stand- ings. The MoJacks welcomed Darryl Rose to the line-up Sunday night. The Oshawa native played the last two seasons with the team but outside commitments kept him away this season. Team officials say Rose is ready to play. Usually a defenseman, he'll see action on the forward lines and the 20- year-old brings size, toughness and lead- ership to the rink. He'll also force oppo- nents to keep their heads up as he likes to throw the open-ice body checks. The MoJacks should be back to a near- ly full line-up for their next outing this coming Sunday night at the Scugog Arena (Dec. 9) when they host the Little Britain Merchants at 7 p.m. And the traditional Family Christmas Night is Dec. 16. Some special plans are on tap. Watch for details soon.
