Describe the changes in the fire department since your start: The new Port Perry station; it is a milestone and one of the biggest changes. There now are 25 to 30 people per station and the call load (number of incidents) has gone up a lot. There used to be around 60 to 70 calls for Caesarea and around 180 for Port Perry. Last year there was 360 calls between both stations and this year we are already at about 430 with four more weeks left in this year, so we've had 110 to 120 more calls than last year. The level of service and training is going a lot higher... we test firefighters more often and keep a record of province-wide training. Any changes that we can expect in the next five years? Staff levels will change as the department and commu- nity grows. We are looking at hiring full- time day staff for a quicker response rate. We are thinking of hiring a preven- tion presentation person and replacing some of the outdated vehicles. What is something the public should know about the fire depart- ment that they probably don't know? Some people in the community think that this station is staffed with full-time firefighters but we only have part-time volunteers who are fire-fighting profes- sionals. And that was 15 minutes with Mr. Miller. Thanks Richard. 'Nick Bronson is a Port Perry High School co-op student who is working at The Port Perry Star.
