Then it was suggested they open with O' Canada and to my sur- prise Mayor Moffatt said "that would be cruel." Well, after Sept. 11 and veteran's Remembrance Day Nov. Il - we proudly sang "O' Canada - God Keep Our Land," at our church - and heard the history of this great anthem. I called Oshawa City Council and was informed they play a recording of O'Canada at every meet- ing and sing along with it. They also say the prayer "Our Father" at every meeting and once a year anyone from another faith may come and say their prayers. It has worked well with Mayor Nancy Diamond and council, why not for Port Perry? Mary Ellen Johansen, Port Perry Traffic light, lower speeds the answer for saving lives To the Editor: When is a stop light going to be installed at 7A and Island Road? We were in an accident on Oct. 5, 2001. As a result my husband is now dead. If there had been a stop light installed this accident may have never occurred. It was raining and we slid into the car ahead and bounced off and hit an east bound car. If there had been a light we could not have had enough accelera- tion to slide down the hill. It was no one's fault, we were well within the speed limit, but I am now alone. My husband had his foot on the brake, but wet roads are as slippery as icy roads. Also the speed limit of 80 km is too fast entering the town of Port Perry. People fish off the causeway and children often dash across the road. This is a situation asking for dis- aster. How many people must die before Port Perry wakes up and installs a light and lowers the speed limit? June Austin, Blackstock Canada's immigration laws all backwards To the Editor: Okay now, let me get this straight. If you're a hard working self- employed Polish family with two children born in this country, Immigration can deport you for being in Canada illegally. If you're a frail 80-plus Australian granny who may die if forced to leave now for Down Under, they can kick you out. If you're a senile 90-plus Ukrainian man, they can send you packing. But if you're an Arab terrorist, all you have to do is claim refugee sta- tus. And the government will let you stay in the country for years, release you ON your Own recog- nizance, and support you at my expense (and oth- ers). Maybe it's just because I'm selfish and racist, but I'm confused. Oh, that's right; | forgot; there aren't any terrorists here from the Middle East. You know, | feel so much better now, knowing the Feds are protecting me from those who are a threat to undermine the peace and stability of our glorious country.
