Lake Scugog Lumber and Coal Company Inc., a fam- ily owned and operated company on Vanedward Dr. which produces lumber products and is a wooden truss manufacturer, pled guilty to the allegations on Dec. 4. The company was then handed a $100,000 fine. "Not a day passes that this family's thoughts are not in my mind... in all of our minds," said Paul Griffen of Lake Scugog Lumber, referring to the relatives: of Gordon Bagshaw, the victim of the July 7, 2000 incident. Mr. Bagshaw suffered fatal injuries when he attempted to service a large press used in the manufacture of roof trusses. "We did not see contesting this matter for the good of his family or for ourselves," Mr. Griffen told The Star. "You do everything you can to maintain a safe working environment. Sometimes it seems impossible to cover every contingency, but you try." Changes requested by the Occupational Health and Safety inspectors at the time of the incident were implemented within 30 days. "We will continue to strive for a better work environ- ment and our thoughts are with this family," he said.
