eet, +p AY i a 2 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 2000 Let it snow! Local resorts open despite slow start to winter By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Local ski resorts report being in fine shape, despite the mild tempera- tures and lack of snow so far this winter. But that hasn't stopped most local resorts from opening up for this years skiing season, says Lakeridge Ski Resort Get Educated! CHER LEE [1d HhiliIShaw Free pee NR TON INET SATE] assistant general manager - Craig MacDonald. "We've been fine this year. We were up and run- ning by Dec. 19 even with the limited amount of snow. Things have been excellent," he said last week, noting that 12 of the resort's 22 runs were open. "We really doen't like to see the warmer tempera- tures, but these days they are not unusual and occur' quite often," Mr. MacDonald, said, noting that snow-making is a very tricky process. The best conditions for man-made snow are a tem- perature of approximately minus 6, with a humidity percentage below 70. For the most part of December and January, the mercury has averaged about minus 4 with humidity between 70 and 80 per cent, falling short of ideal conditions. "If we can get the tem- peratures down, we can do wonders and get every- thing open," he said. Skyloft Ski and Country Club is also having another good year, said operations manager Ken Luke. "We're in fine shape," he 'said earlier this week, adding that 11 of the 18 'slopes at his resort are -open for business.
