The school has had several professional artists in to teach students about various forms of art. But the Grade 8 students - the Class of 2000 - has been working on a mammoth project. Under the direction of artists Adam Brown and Nicole Bauberger, the students have been working on a giant mural since mid-January. Done in acrylic paint, the theme of this 7-foot by 7-foot mural is "Peace in the New Millennium". This is Ms Bauberger's third mural project working with students since September, but the first time she has worked with elementary school students. "It's been a challenge, but the kids have been great and-have consolidated a lot of skills in this mammoth pro- ject," she said. Cartwright art teacher Rebecca Pickering is proud of their efforts, too. "It's been a wonderful experience for my students," she said. "The kids, and the entire school body, are all very pleased with their work." On Monday, Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt is coming to the school to officially unveil the graduation classes' mil- lennium project. wr The idea of having artists come into the school was put forward by Sandy Churchill and Clare Marsh, both of whom are quite active on the School Community Council. Through the assistance of the Ontario Arts Council and Kent Farndale, a local supporter of the arts, they were able to contact artists to teach all grade levels. Their remuneration was paid for by the Ontario Arts Council and the SCC. The entire school was involved. The Grade | and 2 students painted self-portraits using acrylic paints on canvas under the guidance of professional artist Judy Bear Campbell of Uxbridge. She also taught the kindergarten students various techniques. Mr. Brown's and Ms Bauberger's work with the Grade 3s involved music, drama and art to create an underwater world exploring whales. Their work also took them to Mrs. Argues 3-4 class where they worked with an environ- mental theme. Cynthia Couples, a professional artist also from Uxbridge, chose to work with the Grades 4 and 5s, creat- ing clay sculptures, complete with painting and glazing. Mr. Brown, a painter and musician, taught the Grade 6 and 7s, showing the connection through time of art and music, beginning with historical paintings and music, working up to the present. For the Grade 8 "Peace in the New Millennium" mural, students submitted their own personal images of peace. Ms Bauberger developed a design incorporating these images. They painted in acrylics monochromatically (lay- ering one colour over another) to create their finished masterpiece. sedava ESA CT EEE ETE RR 3 Girls and Boys 2 - 6x Fashions and Outerwear by Kirickets, Osh Kosh, Val & Mik, Jo Jo, Real Girls, Pickles, Fila 40% - 50° \_ .
