Teen off to UN after win in Odd Fellows competition By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star The thrilling sights and sounds of New York City will be part of a dream come true this summer for 16-year-old Adrienne Reader of Port Perry. The Grade 11 PPHS student leaves July 3 on a two-week bus trip to the United Nations, International Order of Odd Fellows (1.LO.O.F) Warner Lodge and the Maybelle Rebekah Lodge, Port Perry. Adrienne was one of two candidates who competed in a United Nations stu- dent public speaking competition Sunday (Feb.20) at the Odd Fellows Hall. Her competitor was 16-year-old Cherie Creighton, also from PPHS. Although this is not the first time Warner Lodge has sponsored a student in the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth Program, it's been 12 or so years since it last took part in the program. Over the past 50 years, more than 36,000 students have participated in the two-week tour. Students from all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as visitors from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway partic- ipate. Besides sitting in on UN meetings, Adrienne will also see the famous Statue of Liberty, the Radio-City Music 30) What See, [Perms [Pertmy 985-8448 courtesy of the Hall, and enjoy a three-hour boat tour around Manhattan Island. The 14-day bus tour also includes visits to Ottawa, Gettysburg, Philadelphia and Washington. "During Adrienne's trip to the UN she will be subjected to several world issues. These memories, not to men- tion the countless new friendships, will - last her a lifetime," Mark Sturman, Vice- Grand of Warner Lodge said. "The 1.0.0.F. is the only organization that is allowed into the security council chambers of the United Nations," said Ron Wanamaker, past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ontario. To sponsor a student Warner Lodge pays $950 (U.S.), money it has raised through various endeavours. Students need only to bring money for souvenirs. To spread the word about the competi- tion the Odd Fellows had information circulated throughout the two local high schools. Both girls had to deliver a short speech and write an essay relevant to issues involving the United Nations. Judges for the afternoon event were Durham District School Board trustee Bobbie Drew, Alan Longfield, a retired elementary school principal, and Brian Jones, course director for the Faculty of Education at York University.
