Janetville man lands top prize in Simcoe tourney By Jeff Bower Special to the Star More than 100 ice anglers took to the frozen waters of Lake Simcoe Saturday to compete in the first-ever Beaverton Harbour Ice Fishing Derby. Competitors enjoyed good weather for the open air event, fishing within a one-square-kilo- metre area west of the southern tip of Thorah Island. A total of 27 lake trout and 19 whitefish were caught by the anglers and total weight was used to determine the winners. John VanVeen of Janetville took top spot -- and the $1,000 grand prize -- with a total catch of 26.48 lbs. Helping him secure the win was a hefty 17-1b. laker. Placing second was Leonard Burden with a total catch of 21.86 Ibs., finishing just ahead of Dale Weaver with a 21.24- Ib. tally.
