See Gas task force report ready in April By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The deadline for a final report from the Ontario Gas Price Review Task Force has been bumped up by more than a month, leaving just enough time for the government to make changes in the 2000 budget. Durham MPP John O'Toole, who co-chairs the travelling committee investigating gas prices, told The Star on Tuesday that a final report from the task force is to be presented in April, a month earlier than first projected. "(The provincial government) is concerned so much with these gas hikes that they want it on the cabinet table for discussions... it'll be in the budget," said Mr. O'Toole, hinting that drastic hikes at the pumps could force his government to take action. He said the government may create a schedule of income tax breaks for truckers, farmers, and others who are most affected by spiralling fuel prices. "We may have to give some relief through the income tax side to put more money in the pockets of these people so they can pay for their fuel costs," said Mr. O'Toole. "I'd rather 985-5277 385-850 cut them a break than reduce the tax at the pumps because (the extra profit) would be sucked up by the gas companies; we wouldn't see any of the prices go down. "I'd like to see those people with more money in their paycheque, rather than just us writing a big cheque to the gas companies." The task force was to wrap up its eight-city tour Tuesday in Barrie.
