That may prove difficult for the volunteer leaders, who will have to deal with more paperwork, she said. The current award system was also reviewed. Previously bars engraved with club names would be given to each member who completed specified { requirements. These bars would be placed upon a 4- H plaque, with the member's name engraved on a bar in the middle. This method is too expensive. The office will relocate in Lindsay but their knowledge of Scugog rural communities is limited, says Mrs. Yellowlees. ------c-- By Meghan Kyte Port Perry Star The impending closure of Port Perry's Ontario Municipal Agricultural Federation and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) office raises questions about the future of 4-H clubs here in Scugog. The provincial government has previously funded 4- H programs through OMAFRA but as with all programs, restructuring and cutbacks are occurring. Funding reductions are introduced April | and "4-H will have to go out on its own," says Durham Federation of Agricultural President Karen Yellowlees a local resident of Nestleton. Some funding will remain available, says Mrs. Yellowlees, but she is unsure of how long, or how much. The changes won't affect the people currently enrolled in the program, said Mrs. Yellowlees: "The local clubs are still intact, there is a good volunteer base, travel and leadership opportunities are still in place." Local 4-H leader Gail Johns said funding will be monitored, to determine how much is needed for clubs to operate. Mrs. Johns said most of the pending changes are administrative, and the impact will not be felt by the members so much as the leaders. "This will be a very big transitional year for 4-H," said Mrs. Johns. For instance, previously club books could be ordered through the OMAFRA office in Port Perry, and leaders would receive the number of books they required. Now when a book is requested, one copy ty to make enough copies for each member of their club. This will cut down on copying costs and storage, explains Mrs. Johns.
