CF ayy px AA YAO 18 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" --- > a - ~~ - 2 I I LL I | FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 2000 Chamber promises 'best ever' event with Summerfest By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Port Perry's annual mid-summer cami- val will have a new name and location this year, but there'll still be plenty of fun to be had, says one Scugog Chamber of Commerce official. The former Festival Days has been moved from the downtown core of Port Perry to the fairgrounds on the outskirts of town and renamed Summerfest. And orga- nizers say they will make the most of the new location, promising one of the best carnivals in the event's 30-year history. "Ill have a whole new look to it this year, it'll be bigger and better than ever before," co-ordinator Ray Northey said of the bash, scheduled for July 6-9. Pe, . ' Eft. 1 "i FR + On y . Chamber officials opted for the change when Scugog Township council denied their request to set up the midway in Palmer Park. "We'll have some new things and some of the old things as well. We think that we'll have something everyone likes, and we know people will be judging it more than before," said Mr. Northey. "We're pretty confident about the change of venue, but we realize there are a lot of people who were comfortable with the way things were," he said. "It's always difficult to make changes, but we're pretty 'where the good things in life never change. ve HE Presenting a private enclave Wl of luxury homes on 50' Picturesque Port Perry! Early plans for the 2000 bash call for things to kick off during the early evening of July 6, with a parade leading from the downtown core to the fairgrounds, where Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt will cut the ribbon to officially launch Summerfest. Throughout the weekend, there will be five specific locations setup, offering entertainment for various age ranges. Pavilions will be set up for children, teens, young adults and seniors. There will also be a refreshment tent set up. } Organizers have planned for a larger midway than in the past, with more spec- tacular rides. "There'll be more types of entertain- ment, and there will be games for every- one to enjoy. We'll have arts and crafts, a Durham Regional Police pavilion, heli- copter rides... all kinds of great stuff," said Mr. Northey. Plans also call for a display of the his- tory of Port Perry, courtesy of the Scugog Shores Museum. Businesses from across Scugog, and in particular those in the downtown core, have been invited to set up booths at the carnival.
