Whitby town council recently passed a resolu- tion calling for changes that would allow Canada Geese to be culled from areas where they are a problem. And Whitby councillors want the federal govern- ment to cough up $60,000 to help pay for controlling the number of birds, not- ing that other control methods (oiling eggs, altering habitat) have failed and are costing local taxpayers money. Whitby's plight and the request for culling got support among Scugog council when' the resolu- tion was discussed at the meeting last Monday afternoon. Mayor Doug Moffatt said he does not under- stand why some geese in urban areas can't be shot, packaged and distributed as food through food banks. Scugog, like Whitby and other communities in southern Ontario, has a large population of Canada Geese that reside all summer in the public parks along the waterfront in Port Perry. Their présence has become more than just a nuisance to people using the park as there are fears the geese contribute to the high bacteria levels in the water which lead each summer to the closure of beaches by the Durham Health Unit. One method of (legal) goose control that appears to work involves the use of sheep dogs when the birds first arrive at an area just prior to the spring mating season. Apparently the sheep dogs will scare, the geese off, not. even letting them get their. feet on the |. 1999 GRAND AM SE | Gold, fully loaded, only kms. - | GM Rental Buyback. | $0.00 DOWN -~ $457 per mth. ~~] $1,000 DOWN - $435 per mth.
