wa A wp PRL ERE PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 2000 - 23 GolfNorth Properties takes over local course from ClubLink New owner, no changes at Canterbury Common GC # By Chris Hall Port Perry Star There will be no major changes to the Canterbury Common golf course this year, despite new owner- ship. The local course, which | is located just north of Port Perry within the Canterbury Common subdivision, was acquired last week by GolfNorth Properties Inc. from ClubLink Corp in a March 30 deal. The recent agreement, which saw ClubLink invest $4.4 million into GolfNorth and the two companies exchange a number of golf courses, allows the two sides to join forces to develop and expand mid- market courses, said GolfNorth marketing direc- tor Kevin Hurd. "The general confusion is that we have been pur- chased by ClubLink," said Mr. Hurd this week. "We are sort of a blue-collar ClubLink. "We try to keep our membership and green fee prices down and attract mid-level golfers. ClubLink has more high-end clubs and fees. "When people see the word ClubLink, they usual- ly shake. their head and think their membership and fees are going to go through the roof." The deal will allow GolfNorth to grow to 14 courses with the recent acquisition of Canterbury Common and the Dundee Country Club in Kitchener. As a result of the deal, members with each com- pany's clubs will be per- mitted to play at all the courses owned by the two groups. "The deal has us sort of holding hands; we're both going to remain completely separate entities. We want to keep our courses afford- able and our membership prices down. This will allow us to hold hands with for Boys and ( rls 12-16 years of age. Wa need your help! nization and fundraising. Canterbury Common is a 2000-yard, nine-hole executive course nestled amongst one of Port Perry's newest subdivisions which doesn't fit into ClubLink's concept, said Mr. Hurd. "It looks like a ClubLink course with its Ohio white- sand bunkers, creeping tee-to-green grass... but it fits into our pricing con- cept. It's a beautiful pay- as-you-play course," said Mr. Hurd, noting that no changes will be made under the new ownership. "I wouldn't touch a thing on that course, it's beauti- ful. That course is going to sell itself, and there's noth- ing we can do to make it Mr. Hurd will be in Port Perry for more than a week, overseeing the hiring of new staff members.
