The school offers: a "GrandFriends" program, which sees seniors from around the commu- a companionship. nity stop in periodically to help the students with the school work and offer Trustees leery of call to back Windsor's defiant budget A motion to send a letter of support for one school board's threat to go into debt rather than implement further cuts was brought forth at last Monday night's Durham District School Board meeting. Whitby trustee Liz Roy asked that a letter be drawn up to be sent to the province "supporting in principle" the plan by the Greater Essex County District School Board to refuse to make any further reductions in spending, regardless of provincial funding. The province has advised that it con- siders such an action illegal. And Ms Roy's colleagues on the Durham board advised taking a cautious approach on the issue. Board co-chair Bobbie Drew, trustee for Scugog, said that while she is not totally against the idea, she feels it imprudent to act now. "I feel that we should wait on this until we receive our funding figures, and see exactly how the funding plan will affect this board," said Mrs. Drew. "It would make our statement to the province much clearer." Education Minister Janet Ecker has said she will not tolerate deficit funding by school boards. She has threatened fines, loss of office and other penalties for trustees who willingly budget for deficits. "Such action as that being taken by" the Essex board can levy fines of $5,000," said Mrs. Drew. "We all know how much - and how lit- tle - $5,000 can be," she said, in refer- ence to trustee salaries of $5,000 per year.
