Paula Lishman receives fur industry's Maurice Award By Chris Hall Port Perry Star For the first time in its 43-year history, Canada's premier knit fur award has been presented to a woman: Scugog"s own Paula Lishman. } 'The proprietor of Paula Lishman International was presented with the pres- tigious Maurice Memorial Award on May 3 at the North American Fur Fair in Montreal. The award honours outstanding contri- butions to the fur trade industry in Canada. It was first presented in 1957. "It is the major award to win," Mrs. Lishman said Tuesday, a couple of days after returning home from the show, "People gave me a hard time 20 years ago, but now everyone has knit furs." The 2000 trade show has been very good for the Purple Hill resident. "We've got lots of interest and lots of orders; it's been a really, really great show for us," she said. Lishman fashions have appeared on runways and have graced the front page The Montreal Gazette twice, she said. "It's just been our year at Montreal," said Mrs. Lishman. "We had a great booth and there's been nothing but good comments about our products." This was the 19th year the show has been held in Canada. Mrs. Lishman and her husband Bill are currently looking at moving their retail knit fur store in Port Perry to a major U.S. city; New York City is rumoured as a possible destination. The Lishmans are citing narrow profit margins as a reason to head south of the border.
