PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2000 - 11 Mariposa council report Celebration planned for August By Clifford Eige Weekend Star Mariposa residents are combining three major events into one large weekend celebration Aug. 26 to 28. The township's 150th anniversary - as well as the last year of existence as a municipal entity - will be celebrat- ed with the Trans Canada millennium relay that passes through Little Britain on its way from Uxbridge to Lindsay on Aug. 28. The Trans Canada Trail, the world's longest, will see water relayed from the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans to Ottawa, where they will be poured into a Parliament building fountain. Eight hundred communities across Canada are plan- ning celebrations as the procession passes through their areas. Mariposa residents are making it a three-day party with tours, barbecues, a dance, pancake breakfasts, fes- tive events and the release of butterflies at the Little Britain recreation centre. Recreation director Gerry Barker is organizing the event. He said that Mariposa is the Spanish word for but- terfly, and has made this the theme for the weekend fes- tivities as proposed by resident Connie Nugent. Township council has allocated funds to help finance the event, along with local businesses and sports organi- zations, which have events, food tents and activities planned during the weekend celebrations. Mr. Barker is looking for donations toward the purchase of butterflies and is meeting with all interested parties at the Little Britain arena on May 23 at 7 p.m. to finalize and schedule the events for the program. City off to slow start The new City of Kawartha Lakes transition board has gotten off to a slow start in its first four meetings. Committee members got bogged down on their very first issue, which has not been completely resolved yet: When, where, for how long, and how often to meet. Apparently members have other obligations that are more important than single tier municipality realignment, RIDE's back on the highways The first long weekend of the year has arrived, and with it has come annual RIDE (Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks for drunk drivers. Durham Regional Police will be kicking off their RIDE program here in North Durham on Friday (May 19) in Port Perry shortly after 6 p.m. In their effort to reduce impaired driving, MADD Canada made a cash donation to the Durham Regional Police Service earlier' this year to sponsor the May 19 RIDE program. MADD representative Deborah Armstrong will accompany the officers as they make their way throughout Durham that evening.
