New Life Centre on record pace By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Staff at Lakeridge Health Port Perry experi- enced a baby boom of sorts recently, when a total of nine infants arrived during a span of 36 hours. Nurses and other med- ical staff at the New Life Centre in Port Perry were scrambling throughout the evening of May 9 and for the entire day of May 10, ensuring the safe delivery of six girls and three boys. "It was a pretty wild time for us. We had a hall full of equipment and people," said Gail Verwoerd, a Registered Nurse who assisted with the deliveries. Four of the births were unexpected, and were delivered via Caesarean section. "The (nurses) here are so good, they changed their lives around to help out," «said Mrs. Verwoerd, in appreciation of her col- leagues who worked over- time and remained at the hospital throughout the boom. "They (the births) were pretty spread out; we did- n't have two at the same time. They were fairly well spaced out, which gave us plenty of time to shuffle around people and equipment," she said. And, most important, everyone is in good health. "They were all safe arrivals," said Mrs. Verwoerd, noting that the largest child weighed in at almost 10-pounds. "There were no compli- cations or medical prob- lems. Everyone is doing well and has gone home." With this month's baby boom, staff at Lakeridge Health Port Perry are looking at surpassing the previous high of April 1999, when 29 babies were delivered at the New Life Centre. "Spring is usually pret- ty busy for us, but so far we've already delivered 26," said Mrs. Verwoerd on Tuesday... a day upon which three more infants were born. "Obviously we're going to break our record. We've got 12 more planned births coming that we know of." The local New Life Centre not only provides a local service for local residents, but attracts parents from across the region, she added. "We have people come from Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby, Cannington, Uxbridge, Blackstock, and Sunderland... we tend to go far and wide," said Mrs. Verwoerd.
