McClelland Port Perry Star Most Scugog Township councillors are lukewarm to the idea of having ads on benches on public property. "I will not be support- ing this idea," said Councillor Ken Carruthers when the issue was dis- cussed by the works com- mittee Monday morning. "I don't see any need to crowd our township with this kind of advertising," he said, adding "it has been tried before and did nothing for the communi- ty." He was referring to a bench that was located at the intersection of Simcoe a sign for a local real estate agent across the back rest. The township has received a proposal from the Oshawa rep of Bench Ads Canada, who has identified about 10 loca- tions in Scugog where he'd like to put benches bearing ads on the front or back. Scugog would get $120 annually in revenue from each bench, says the com- pany, which would also supply the bench. Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden agreed with Councillor Carruthers that public benches are "for people to sit on and rest", rather than advertising He said he would oppose locating any ad bench in the downtown core of Port Perry. Mayor Doug Moffatt said he is concerned that in a couple of years the benches could end up looking "like a garbage pail." The potential locations identified by the company in Scugog are all in high traffic areas along busy streets such as Hwy. 7A and Simcoe St. However, Ward | rep Keith Bacon said the idea may have some merit. "Somebody has to pay for these benches. The public wants them; why not let corporations spon- and Perry Streets that had vehicles. sor them?" he argued. A Port Perry man was airlifted to a _ Toronto hospital last week and remains in serious condition after suffering injuries in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday evening. Durham Regional Police say a Ford Mustang was eastbound on Scugog Line 6, just east of Hwy. 12, at a high rate of speed around 9 p.m. on May 10 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, rolling it several times in a field on the north side of the road. Mark Dempster, a 20-year-old Port Man injured in single-car crash Perry resident, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital in Oshawa by ambulance, before being airlifted to Sunnybrook in Toronto. He is listed in serious but stable condition. Police did not indicate if the driver, 19-year-old Michael Taylor of Whitby, was injured in the accident. Anyone with information on this acci- dent is asked to contact Const. Mark Stone of the Durham Regional Police Traffic Management Unit at 579-1520, extension 5213. Councillor Bacon went on to say that perhaps there are some on council who don't think the benches would be appro- priate for downtown Port Perry. "But there are other parts of the township besides Port Perry," he said. The committee was told that the company has an agreement to supply benches in areas of Clarington, Scugog's neighbour to the south- east. While the idea was greeted coolly by most members of council, it was decided to let staff carry on discussions with the company, keeping in mind the input from members of council. It was agreed that the - benches would be strictly excluded from any area of Scugog deemed by coun- cil to be historically important or significant. 61S (OAL NOIOAT 60 Vanedward Dr. Unit #7 ALUMINUM 985-0075 Port Perry GOUUAGE FEST MAROON] Large selection of Futons & Bedroom Suites SINGLE SET DOUBLE SET QUEEN SET $197 $252 $318 COMFORT MATTRESS MATTRESS MATTRESS 10 YEAR WARRANTY $109 $142 $175 25 YEAR WARRANTY SCROLL SINGLE SET DOUBLE SET QUEEN SET LUX-0-PEDIC QUILT $279 $330 $399 MATTRESS MATTRESS MATTRESS 16 YEAR WARRANTY ~~ $185 $205 $255 16 YEAR WARRANTY $389 $401 dalel Melis] Wad 14010) and we'll chop off the taxes [= . : IR SHY) | OO} Ol l-1a), mattress or mattress set purchase of $500.
