PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2000 - 2§ Mosport's 2000 stock car season could be an exciting one for the fans New season looks like a great one for race fans By J. "Wally" Nesbitt From Corner Five If the first night of com- petition is any indication, the 2000 season at Mosport Speedway should be a stock car racing fan's delight. The fields were a little thin, typical of open- ing night, but the action more than made up for the less than expected car count. With all four of Mosport's racing divisions present, the ThunderCars were appointed to kick off the new year. . Oshawa's Doug Willis started his season off on a winning note as he claimed his first ever feature win (pending technical results). Jim Blundell was next across the line followed by the Ford of Terry Shaw and then best friends John Smith and Dave Crowther. Trevor Veitch made the most of a guest ride in Bob Kish"s new Challenger car as he easily claimed one heat win as well as the fea- ture dash. Kish, who was attending an ill-timed wed- ding, may have a tough time wrestling Veitch out of the Aaron Ashbridge's homer kicks off 2000 T-Ball season ~The season opener for - T-ball started off chilly, but despite the cold, the turnout was. tremendous. The first game of the sea- son between Dairy Queen and McTague's Mighty ing. hitters for the first inning included Hannah Pomeroy and Travis Becker. During the Soeond inning, Christopher Bray caught a hit made by car after the dominating performance he made on Saturday. Pursuing Veitch to the checkers in the 15 lap feature were truck new- comer Mike Poulton and John Carlyle. Whitby's Jim Horner finished in fourth spot, one lap down. The Mosport Modified division feature got off to a rocky start as six cars were involved in a first turn melee. Fortunately all drivers, including Port Perry's Rod Sauder, were able to continue the 20 lap event. Defending champi- on, Darrin Wrigglesworth, led for more than half of _ the race but within one lap was passed by Dwight Brown and then two comers later, Graham Brown. These three would battle on to the finish in order with John Teune and Oshawa"s Mike Frederick rounding out the top five. In 1999, Brad Corcoran claimed the Late Model title by a mere seven points over West Lee Talons. In the first event of the new year, Talons exacted some revenge as he went flag to flag to take the fea- ture win ahead of a charging Corcoran. Newcastle's Jamie Hale finished a close third, followed by Hampton's Joe Mallette and former champion lan Bourque. Next weekend at the Speedway the ThunderCars, the Challengers and the Modifieds are scheduled to do battle. Next weekend is also one of the busiest ever at the Mosport Raceway as the B.F. Goodrich Trans- Am series comes to enter- tain. According to Mosport's Marketing Director, Glenn Butt, an amazing 38 cars have pre-registered for the headlining Trans-Am event. In addition, eight support classes including both open wheeled and sedan racing series will fill out an action packed card. Long time race fans may remember the exuberant Mosport track announcer, Jim Martyn. Jim, who is now employed by Don Panoz as the voice of the American LeMans Series, was in England last week sched- uled to work the ALMS race at Silverstone Raceway Park. Unfortunately, on May 11 Jimmy was involved in a serious traffic accident and has suffered head injuries. Mr. Panoz has ensured that Jim has received the best care available and has reported that Jim is' "Clinically Improving."
