PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2000 - 27 ENTIRELY EQUESTRIAN Showing Western For The Rest of Us Continued from page 26 pleasure class. I'm sure that most of you have at some time or another seen a Western horse loping in front and jogging behind, or jog- ging so slow that a turtle could move faster, or practically dragging it's nose on the ground. Well, these ways of going are now frowned upon. The horse should travel with cadenced rhythm at all three gaits. The poll should be level with the withers, but be sure to check your Breed rules. A Pleasure class is just what it sounds like - the horse should be a pleasure to ride and a pleasure to watch. The Speed events that we offer are Barrels, Pole Bending and Down and Back. There are other Speed events that may be offered at other clubs' shows. Barrels is a fun but challenging class. Each rider and horse must run a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. The main thing to remember is that you must cross your own lines, go around all three barrels, then back through the timers. Look at the diagram and you'll see what that means. Barrels that are knocked over add time penalties. Pole Bending is very challenging to do well. The riders must weave their horses through a course of upright poles. At the club level most horses will trot or not change leads through the poles. Cantering is not necessary at the club level, but this is a timed event. Poles knocked over result in time penal- ties. Watching a good Pole Bending horse is a real treat. The Down and Back is very simple, very fast and very exciting. They take ~ gate the bottom two barrels out of the barrel pattern and you simply run up to the top barrel, go around and come back through the timers. Knocking the barrel adds time penal- ties. We also offer a Trail class, but according. to our club rules,.you may do Trail in Western or English tack. The horses do a set course of obsta- cles which can include opening and closing a (on horseback), going over a bridge, jog- ging or loping over poles, putting on a rain coat, backing through an "L" shape of poles on the ground and moving a bag filled with cans from one barrel to another. Riders are judged on perform- ance between the obsta- cles and how well they handle each task pre- sented to them. In conclusion, we want people to know that Western riding is not as 27 WINONA DRIVE «4 STOUFFVILLE, ONTARIO L4A 3A1 BISA BEST IN ESE AWARDS Tel: (905) 642-1161 Fax: (905) 642-1162 Int: www.bisa-awards.com ¥ Manufacturers of Custom Show Ribbon Awards AWARDS AND ¥ Prestige Awards & Gifts RECOGNITION PROD- ¥ Trophies, Plaques, Medals UCTS FOR SHOWS, ¥ Insignia, Jewellery COMMUNITY & COR- easy as it may look.
