"Fall Safely" will be held on June 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clarington Beech Centre, 26 Beech Ave., Bowmanville. This workshop will include safety messages, a light luncheon, "The purpose of this work- shop is to make seniors aware of potential safety hazards in "their environment and how to prevent falls" says Carrie Griffith, Public Health Nurse with Durham Region Health Department. "The Health Department works closely with various community groups to increase awareness and encourage everyone to follow the Top 12 Tips to Preventing Falls, a resource developed by Durham Region Health Department," explains Ms. Griffith. These tips include: exercising regularly; eating at least three well balanced meals daily, to help avoid UXBRIDGE Come take a closer look at us! v SERVICE v SELECTION v MUCH CLOSER THAN YOU THINK fatigue; taking time for friends and socializing; avoid isolation; planning ahead and avoid rushing; rushing increases the risk of falls, having regular health check-ups; using medi- cation safely and properly; wearing supportive shoes with non-skid soles; using walking aids correctly; canes or walkers should be fitted and used properly; doing a periodic home safety check; check for secure handrails, well lit stairs, non-skid bathmats, etc; remov- traffic areas clear; securing rugs; avoid small rugs and mats that could slide or bunch up; using night lights to brighten darkened hallways, bathrooms and stairs.
