Newly acquired Duke McNutt showed his notification in their mail Friday, June 16 of their new address. By the following day a petition indi- cating residents wanted to keep things the way they were was circu- lated in downtown businesses. According to its organizer, that led to almost a thousand signatures. That petition was presented the following Monday by Councillor Gerry Emm to the Town of Whitby Operations Committee and a recommendation sent forward to council. Last Monday evening, a fairly substantial cross section of Brooklin, including long- time residents, newly arrived resi- dents and the#yusiness community - addressed council members viewing their concerns that the postal code change was only the tip of the iceberg, that Brooklin would eventually lose its identity totally. The recommen- dation requesting that Canada Post retain the name of Brooklin in its postal code, and that local member of parliament Judi Longfield be noti- fied of such was withdrawn from the agenda after it was learned that Ms Longfield was attempting to arrange a meeting between Brooklin resi- dents and Canada Post on the sub- ject. As far as is known at this time, everything is in limbo awaiting this "town hall type meeting being arranged by Ms Longfield, but I will keep you up to date. Group '74 Donation A big thanks to members of Group '74 who recently donated a televi- sion/VCR combination to Brooklin Branch Library. According to Grqup '74 president Hillary McPherson, the club will also be paying the annual licencing fee required for the library to use the equipment to show films to the public. Group '74, as the name implies has been going since 1974 and was originally formed to allow local ladies the chance to participate in various crafts etc. According to McPherson the present day commit- "ment runs more along the lines of public service. They have fundraisers and help various community services and also Denise House, the regional facility for abused women and their children. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month and would be pleased to add new members to its roster. If interested call Hillary at 655-3036.
