FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2000-9 PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" Just when you thought it was safe for SCREENING ROOM By John Foote THE PERFECT STORM (Vetere) Directed by Wolfgang Peterson Now in theatres JAWS (Vetere vx) Directed by Stephen Spielberg Scientists claim that a Force Twelve wind in a storm has the sound of a church organ being played by a child. The fierce winds inhale air, water, and virtually every- thing mankind places within reach of the storm. Force Nine has the sound of a scream. Force Ten is said to be high-pitched shriek, while Force Eleven is a moan. Force Twelve is often the last sound many men and women on the high seas have heard before they perished in the destruction and force of what can be Mother Nature. Based on a true story, that of the Andrea Gail fishing vessel, The Perfect Storm is a superb adventure film that is also a horror film, with the monster being very real to us all ... the power of nature. The film tells the stories of the courageous men and women who risk their lives every working day, pitting their tiny fishing boats against the simply astounding and unpredictable power of the forces of nature. | ~ Wolfgang Peterson first came to the attention of North American film audiences and critics for his astounding drama Das Boot (1982), a German film that explored the happenings aboard a submarine during the Second bring tension to the already unbearable surroundings, the film was an honest account of the German submarine soldier's experiences during the war. Das Boot earned six Academy Award nominations including a best director nomination for Peterson, who immediately cashed in his . success by coming to the United States to make films. He has had great success with pictures such as The Neverending Story (1984) and In the Line of Fire (1993), but just as many flops with patriotic dreck such as Air Force One (1997). With The Perfect Storm he seems to have found a story that merges brilliantly with his particular talents as a director, which is to blend finely-tuned character stud- ies with that of an incredible story thereby exploring the human condition in terrifying surroundings. While The Perfect Storm has gained a great deal of press coverage for its jaw dropping, awe inspiring visual effects, the characters are very much at the heart of the story, bringing us into their world and helping us care for them when disaster strikes. Gloucester, Massachusetts is home to the Andrea Gail, a swordfishing boat captained by Billy Tyne (George Clooney). The veteran fisherman is in the midst of a series of disappointing catches that could bring him to financial ruin. To make matters worse, he is docked beside the Hanhah Boden, a hugely successful ship cap- tained by Linda Greenlaw (Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio). : Tyne becomes convinced he can change his run of bad luck by going into dangerous waters beyond the reach of New England boats, into Flemish Cap, a remote area near Newfoundland known for its fine catches. Once at sea, Billy hears about the storm building off- shore but is convinced he can beat the storm back to the coast, taking an enormous catch with him. What happens is both heartbreaking and terrifying: Hurricane -Grace merges with two other fierce weather fronts to become one ungodly, terrifying storm that threatens to destroy everything in its path. Warnings are sent out to all ves- sels to return to shore, but the Andrea Gail does not dip... Memorable performances such as the one turned in by Robert Shaw made Jaws, recently re- released, a classic. receive any such warning. Directly in the path of the storm, the ship's crew becomes engaged in a life and death struggle with the most powerful force on the plan- et ... nature. In a picture such as this, dominated with remarkable visual effects, it can often be difficult for the cast of actors to make any kind of real impression. But the cast of fine actors involved in The Perfect Storm do marvelous work, each creating an indelible impression on the viewer. Please turn to page 15 World War.
