| a i "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JULY 21, 2000 - 11 New officer appointed to Lakeridge hospitals here By Chris Hall Weekend Star Roy Manuel has been hired as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the two northern Lakeridge Health Corp. hospital sites. Bringing with him a wealth of experi- ence from his native Newfoundland, Mr. Manuel was officially welcomed to the job on July 3 by staff in Port Perry and Uxbridge, as- well as Lakeridge Health CEO Brian Lemon. During -his introduction to the local media last week, Mr. Manuel said he looks forward to the challenge of working outside his home province for the first time in his long career. "It's going to be a great experience and opportunity for me, moving to a new province and working in a rural health care area," said Mr. Manuel, who is responsible for the day-to-day adminis- trative operations of both northern hospi- tal sites. ; The position of COO opened up last year after Guy Kirvan retired. Mr. Manuel heard of the job opening through con- tacts, and applied. At the time of his appointment to the position, he was the CEO of the Peninsulas Health Care Corp. in Clarenville, Newfoundland. He began his career as a Registered Nurse, and later became manager of patient care at the "Health Sciences Centre in St. John's. Mr. Manuel spent two years, from 1995- 1997, as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Institutions for Newfoundland"s Health Department. "We're pleased that someone of his calibre was available to us," said Mr. Lemon of Mr. Manuel's hiring. The new COO's job description may change soon. Doctors working at the Uxbridge site have asked that their hos- pital be affiliated with the Markham- Stouffville health system. That could occur later this year, if the Ministry of Health and the District Health Council recommend it. "We're looking at future arrangements, and we anticipate a review; we're open to a review," said Mr. Lemon. He is expect- ing the okay to proceed with a review of the system as early as this summer. "We're expecting an answer from the ministry relatively soon, this summer or certainly this fall. We're encouraging an early review, because this kind. of situa- tion is hard on the staff. We want a con- clusion as soon as reasonably possible, through a thorough review." And no matter what affiliation the Uxbridge site has in the future, there are = Bian - New Lakeridge Health Corp. "The current hospital is not suitable at all for an addition... we cannot upgrade it," Mr. Lemon said. "In all likelihood there will be a replacement of the Uxbridge building. There is enough land there to replace it, which would be the most likely scenario. It should be in the relatively near term, but were talking years, not months." Construction is expected to take more than two years, he said. NEN. General hs J. 9 ar Bearing Service Inc.
