ell "WEEKEND STAR" , FRIDAY, JULY 21, 2000 - 25 J Final week of Major Series Lacrosse action is wrapping up Redmen on top as regular season's nearly complete The Brooklin Redmen are in the final week of the Major Series regular season and their offensive power continues to be evident. On the weekend, the Redmen outscored their two opponents by a score of 48-23. On Friday the Redmen travelled to the Six Nations Indian Reserve and played the Chiefs. The team came out with a 22-9 victory and two important points. The following night the Redmen returned home to host the Akwesasne Thunder, they were winners again and posted a 26-14 win over the Thunder. As a result, the team is now in top spot in the Major Series, they have played 16 of their 18 games and with a record of 12-4-0 they have 24 points. The Brampton Excelsiors are in second place having played 15 of their 18 games and have a record of 10-5-0 with 20 points. Game | In the Six Nations game the Redmen played a solid first period. Gary Rosyski scored a hat trick in the first and the Redmen took a 6-4 lead into the dressing room. The second period was all Redmen as they outscored the Chiefs by a score of 9-3. Rosyski got ° his fourth of the night and the Redmen scored four times in a span of one minute and fifteen seconds with four minutes to go to put the game out of reach. The teams came on for the third period with the Redmen up by a score of 15-7. In the third, the offense did not slow down, the visitors scored six unan- swered goals on their way to a 22-9 victory over the Chiefs. - The team had the bus loaded up and ready to go by 11:30 p.m. for the drive ' back to Whitby. However, a traffic accident at Highway 27 and Steeles on the way back delayed the arrival of the bus until after 3 p.m. The team returned to the rink 12 hours later in prepa- ration for their opponents on Saturday night. The game also featured a duel between the top two leading scorers in the series, Shawn Williams for the Redmen and John Tavares for the Thunder. A solid defense and a wave of offense were what the Redmen needed on this night, as they beat the visitors by a score of 26-14. As a result, the team is alone in first and Shawn Williams has 77 points com- pared to 70 for John Tavares. The Redmen came out very strong in the first. Brad MacArthur and Ken Millin each scored twice to help the Redmen take an 11-2 lead into the first intermis- sion. In the second period the Thunder shook off the effects of their four hour bus trip to the rink and scored three times in the first five minutes to close the gap to 11-5 before the Redmen rallied with a goal by Marty O'Brien. The Thunder outscored the 'Redmen in the second peri- od 8-5 and the teams went into the second intermis- sion with the Redmen up 16-10. Once again the Redmen showed their offensive prowess as they scored seven times by the halfway mark of the third before the Thunder scored a goal with nine minutes to go in the game.
