Recognized world-wide for his work in environmental issues, peace and nuclear disarmament, Maxwell Bruce was named on July 13 as one of 103 Canadians appointed to or promoted within the Order, the country's highest honour. "I was quite honoured when | was informed of it," said Mr. Bruce. An official presentation ceremony is scheduled for October. Nominated for the honour by his good friend Dr. Charles Godfrey, a fellow lawyer and environmentalist, Mr. Bruce was named to the Order of Canada by Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson. The son of a former Port Perry resident, Dr. HA. Bruce, the Leaskdale man was born in Toronto and later graduated from law school, then went on to a career in international law. "I worked at a commercial law firm in Toronto until the late 70s, but | was always interested in international affairs," said Mr. Bruce. He moved to London, where he hoped to establish a branch of the firm in England, and specialized in Canadian commercial law. And throughout his life, he fostered a fascination with world-wide affairs. The result was a successful 25-year career as an inter- national environ- mental lawyer, dealing with gov- emments around the globe. As well, Mr. Bruce was a legal advi- sor and volunteer with many non- governmental organizations, a founder of the Canadian Parks and Wildemess Society in the 1960s, and Maxwell Bruce 'has worked for more than 25 years with Britain's Advisory Committee for the Protection of the Seas. Later this year he will fly to Britain to present a paper during the annual confer- ence of the International Organization of Scientists. Supporters of arms control and disarmament, the organization is working to abolish nuclear weapons and won the Nobel Peace Prize five years ago. Mr. Bruce is also a member of the Planning Council of the International Ocean Institute, and he co-founded two charitable trusts that support marine research and education at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. Trustee Nancy Loraine currently serves an area equal in size to all of the southern school areas combined, excluding Scugog Township, which is represented by trustee Bobbie Drew. The board met to approve a recommenda- tion that the current level of 11 trustees be main- tained. The recommendation is based on the fact that because population growth does not warrant the addition of more trustees. The clerks of the three largest school areas - Oshawa, Whitby and Pickering - have the final say in the recommenda- tion, a situation that Scugog trustee Drew calls "stacked." Mrs. Drew said that the board would like to see another trustee added to lighten the load of the Uxbridge-Brock trustee. "It is fortunate indeed for the people of Durham board won't increase the number of trustees for next term Uxbridge-Brock that Nancy (Loraine) is as dedicated. and hard a worker as she is for her constituents," said Mrs. Drew. "The amount of travel (six or more meetings a month plus trips to the 11 schools in the area) would put some people off of seeking such a public ser- vice position." Ms Loraine, who is cur- rently on a week's holi- day, has said in the past that while she has been able to manage the task, "I worry about what comes after. It may be more difficult to find peo- ple willing to take on the job, given the travel and time commitment." Ms Loraine has not yet announced whether or not she will seek another three-year term. Municipal elections are held in November. "That is something | will decide with the help of my family," she said in an interview.
