"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JULY 21, 2000 - § Inspector Bill Temple's a 25-year yeteran By Chris Hall Weekend Star Officers and staff at North Durham's 26 Division wel- comed a new top cop with the arrival of Inspector Bill Temple this month. With the promotion of former Inspector Chuck Mercier to the position of Superintendent of Crime Management, the door opened for Insp. Temple, a 25- year veteran with the Durham Regional Police Service, to assume command here. And, he gladly accepted the challenge. "No one knew (promotions) were coming, so it was a pleasant surprise far me and everyone else," said Insp. Temple, who spent the last three years as admin- istrative staff-sergeant at 1.7 Division in Oshawa. "I'm quite thrilled to be up in North Durham; I've never had the opportunity to work up here, but | know I'll love it," he said. "From what I've seen so far, it's a great place with good people, and there's some top- notch officers here who are experienced and care about the community." During his rise through the ranks, Insp. Temple has held a number of positions, including general patrol officer, coach officer, detective, recruiting officer, and patrol and community sergeant. Temple said he'll encourage his officers to help reduce "the element of society who likes to remove people's property when they're not at home". Insp. Temple lives in Oshawa with his wife of 25 years, Darlene, and has two daughters.
