Critics, most of whom seemed to have a philosophical or political axe to grind with the new right wingers, decried the amount of attention given the new party, and its leadership cam- paign. They tended to conclude that the various media outlets' extensive coverage of the Alliance amounted to promotion of its platform. In.other words, they thought that the coverage went beyond coverage, becoming promotion. : : It could be an understandable conclusion to arrive at, but there's another way to look at it: The media were caught up in the Alliance race because it was an explosive, action-packed instance of political evolution. It's not every day a new political party is born, particularly one that will instantly become the Official Opposition, and could, in the foreseeable but not immediate future, take a run at forming a gov- emment. The rise of the Alliance coincides with the apparent decline of the Progressive Conservative Party as a national presence, as well. Just like the barn-storming Preston Manning, who captivated the national media a decade and a bit ago, Stockwell Day is a new political phenomenon. It's the responsibility of the media to keep track of such trends. drop it by The Star office. stella Asling of Epsom sent 'in this cute photo of granddaughter Janell, 3, of Lethbridge, trying to coax a grumpy cat from atop the woodpile. As this issue is being debated before the Ontario Municipal Board, the concerns of all for the environment and the need to protect these sensitive areas is of great importance as developers encroach. So often, development is equated with progress dnd income with scant regard for the impact and problems it creates now and in Care for customer was extraordinary picked up by limousine at 7 a.m. Tuesday for the airport, Wendy explained Brock was at a meeting and would not be home until later that night. She asked us to be at the store by 6:30 a.m. and Brock would be thete to open, the store and could assist me. He drove several miles early that morning and was there when | arrived and greeted me with his usual friendly demeanor and proceeded to repair my glasses. He sent me on my way with "Have a good trip," a smile and no charge. What could have ruined our trip was saved by Brock Reville who went above and beyond the call of duty for a very grateful customer. Thank you very much. Marion Wallace Port Perry All the best to land trust organizers years to come. Lake Scugog is an example of little or no planning as far as development is concerned, with much of the shoreline being lost to commercial and housing subdivisions. Congratulations to all that are forming this Land Trust, and a request that the municipal board will acknowledge the need for some strict guidelines to protect these sensitive areas for future generations.
