"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 2000 - 25 Try it out before this weekend's Devinci Dirt Crit & Relay in Bethany «££ Riders invited to check out new Alpha Racing track The all new Alpha Racing Cross country criterium course in Bethany is sched- uled for completion this week, and the sponsors are inviting riders to come out and give it a try anytime between 6:00 p.m. and dark at the regular August 3 Thursday Night Ride. This will provide riders the opportunity to try the course before the Devinci Dirt Crit & Relay, a 2-stage mountain bike event, to be held on Sunday August 6. The course features some great new turns and burns, switchbacks and ramps, and of course an awesome new bridge that will provide riders and spectators with a great "over and under" effect. There are terrific opportu- nities for riders to get air- borne, and of course the option is always there to ride around or over slowly if that is more in line with the rider's speed and dar- ing. The Bethany race site is renowned in mountain bik- ing circles as the best in Ontario from a spectator perspective. The entire Dirt Crit section can be viewed all at once, and there ar many spots along the route that cry out for one of those great camera shots. The Dirt Crit and Relay event on August 6 is com- prised of a cross-country criterium style race, fol- lowed by a relay race over a three-kilometer route, a brand new concept for Canadian riders. The race isopen to riders of all levels and abilities, and the entire course is ideally positioned for spectators to enjoy watching the riders take on - the many course chal- lenges. Devinci Bicycle of Canada and Bay Cycle of Pickering are the major sponsors for the Dirt Crit and Relay event. Devinci and Bay Cycle have made available over a thousand dollars in great prizes for heat and relay winners, and a brand new Devinci bicy- cle will be won as a regis- trant draw prize. To get to the Thursday Night Ride, take Porter Road (County Road #32) off Highway #115 (north of Bowmanville) to Weston Road, turn right onto Weston, and the site is one kilometer on the right side. From the east or west, take Highway #7A towards Bethany, turn south on Porter Road, and left on Weston. Travel time is approximately 20 minutes from Peterborough, Bowmanville or Lindsay, and 30 minutes from Cobourg. Registration is open at 6:00 p.m., with rid- ing until dusk. There is a timed 10-kilometer race at 7:00 p.m. for those inter- ested in competing.
