PORT PERRY FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 2000 Trustees hope strife in schools is avoided By Rik Davie Weekend Star Restored extracurricular activities for stu- dents and good relations with employees are at the top of the wish list for the two trustees rep- resenting north Durham Region as another school year approaches. Bobbie Drew, trustee for Scugog Township, said contract negotiations between the Durham District School Board and its employees are at the top of her list of priorities. "We need-all our employee consieto-saien care of in a way that allows a full school experi- ence for all bir students" she'said. Mrs. Drew is on the negotiating committee that is trying to reach a contract with Durham's 1,300 secondary school teachers. The 'teachers, members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) District 13, have voted 71 per cent in favor of giving their execu- tive a strike mandate. Most teachers here have refused to partici- pate in extracurricular activities for the past two years, in protest over increased teaching time and other issues forced on them by provincial legislation. Teachers union officials have said some job action is likely this fall, but say a full-blown strike isn't the only option available to them. When asked if she expected labour strife in Durham high schools this fall, Mrs. Drew tried to be optimistic. "I would hope not," she said. "I don't believe the public will put up with much more." But the disenchantment among secondary school teachers, brought on by the sweeping changes to working conditions imposed by provincial legislation, is not lost on the veteran trustee.
